D&D 5E (2014) Mage Hand and Trap Avoidance

Exactly. The investigation part is fun. A trap that's just out there in the open with its triggering mechanism and effect on full display doesn't require any investigation - and doesn't really qualify as being a trap.

D&D 5E (2014) Mage Hand and Trap Avoidance

And I think the distinction is why your example trap fell flat for you. You presented a trap that was already 80-90% solved, because the "know that the trap exists" and "identify the trap's mechanism" parts of the problem were pre-solved by the goblin who triggered it, and then you were...

D&D 5E (2014) Mage Hand and Trap Avoidance

If by "obvious" you mean that they'd have been easily spotted even without the corpses as a clue, then no, it's not a trap, it's a deterrent. The whole room is saying "you're not allowed to be here, and if you try to be here you'll die." If either the trigger or the mechanism would not have been...

D&D 5E (2014) Mage Hand and Trap Avoidance

If you want someone to understand what you're talking about when you say "trap", yes.

A deterrent, or a hazard. Just like a barbed-wire fence is a deterrent. Cover it with leaves or vines so that you can't see the barbs and it turns into a trap.

D&D 5E (2014) Mage Hand and Trap Avoidance

If there's no chance of it going unnoticed I'm not sure it qualifies as a trap.

Only if it's clearly visible. For many traps the purpose is to challenge the party's ability to find it in the first place, and then to figure out how to disable it. If those parts are challenging, then the actual act of disabling it doesn't need to carry any risk or cost.

    Rewatching Bond films

Yeah, Moonraker wasn't a planned outing. In the end credits of The Spy Who Loved Me it even says that Bond will return in For Your Eyes Only. But then Star Wars happened and suddenly SPACE was the big selling point, so let's get in on the action! No time to write a new script, let's just recycle...

What videogames are you playing in 2025?

I was mostly going from Metacritic. Average review score 81% and user rating 7 didn't seem stellar. I'll take a look at some more actual play and may give it a go.

How is Avowed? It's been tempting me, but the reviews seem rather mixed.

    Rewatching Bond films

I have a soft spot for this one as it's literally the first movie I remember seeing at the cinema. To me the Lotus is the Bond car (I had the diecast toy of it) and a lot of the stunts and action sequences still stand up well. Plus not just one but two evil lairs! But yeah, Moore's fighting...

What videogames are you playing in 2025?

I'm getting there. I've started playing BG3 maybe a dozen times, but only played it through to the end once.

What videogames are you playing in 2025?

It's been ages since I played something actually new. Months since I even switched on my PS5. The last new AAA game I bought was Spider-man 2, there just haven't been any recent releases that have caught my eye. Most recently I've been playing through both XCOM and XCOM 2 for the nth time...

    Trailer Andor Season 2 Trailer

Yeah, one batch per story arc, which I guess is better for viewer retention, but seems like it'll reduce the impact. Part of what made the rising tension of the first season's arcs work was having to wait for the next episode.

D&D General The D&D Memes Thread

Reminds me of the question that comes up most often from work colleagues when I say that I spent my vacation at a convention playing role-playing games. "Did you win?" "Um..."

D&D 5E (2014) Giving monsters more (unlimited?) reactions in one turn

It doesn't sound like you want this monster to have unlimited reactions. You're not, for instance, looking for it to be able to make opportunity attacks multiple times per round. So what's wrong with just saying "this ability does not expend the creature's reaction"?

D&D General The blood war can finally end!

Creatures of fundamental chaos and evil would be ruled by their whims and passions, and as exemplars of an opposed philosophy there's little that arouses a demon's passionate hatred more than a devil.

    Amazon takes over Bond franchise

I'm just imagining a Solo-style prequel in which Bond drinks his first martini, drives his first Aston Martin, fires his first Walther and seduces-and-abandons his first evil henchwoman all in the same training-mission-gone-real.
