Interested in checking out non-D&D fantasy "old school" ttrpgs

I like RuneQuest 2e quite a bit as a change-up from D&D/D&-ish games. ( I never played the later versions). I also like the 1st edition of Stormbringer (1981), also from The Chaosium. And hey, since it is Chaosium's 50th anniversary, give them a look!

    Shadowdark Finally Played Shadowdark

When it came out, it got a lot of side-eye from my gaming circles, and I had a relatively negative opinion of it until the mid-2010s, when it slightly improved. There are some really wicked monsters in there, but a lot of the rules seem to fall in the "who would use this?" category for me...

    Shadowdark Finally Played Shadowdark

Played it once at a convention. It is easy to teach and get people going, and I'm guessing the piles of random tables are source of ideas (if not for rolling up entire adventures) for new GMs, but in the end, I'm sitting on 40+ years of D&D experience, and Shadowdark isn't what I am looking...

D&D 3.x 3rd Edition Revisited - Better play with the power of hindsight?

Interesting. My initial reaction was: it's fine if you stick with the core, and end the campaigns around 10th level or so. I ran a 3.5 game for about 2.5 years, and the players didn't get past level 9, and it was fine. Likewise, I played in a Dragonlance 3.5 game for about 5 years, and...

AD&D 1E What was so bad about unearthed arcana 1e?

Hah! Yeah. Somehow, my two copies have held together over the years.

Other D&D Variant Basic Fantasy - Anybody here regularly play it? Why yes, why not?

Straight up OSE is just straight up BX, so I'd just play BX. As far as the advanced versions on LL vs OSE, I'm not sure why, but I the Advanced LL just sits better with me that OSE Advanced. (I own them both, and could play either one, and it wouldn't make much difference, but I just like the...

How many were abused due to their love of D&D, RPGs, and related items when they were young?

I never caught any crap about it from my parents, outside of they wished I spent as much time on homework as I did on D&D, which is understandable. There was a family of evangelicals down the street who told me I was "going to blazes!" because I played D&D. I replied something to the effect...

Other D&D Variant Basic Fantasy - Anybody here regularly play it? Why yes, why not?

I never bothered with it. I've checked in on it over the years and it doesn't offer enough over Moldvay/Cook BX to move to it. I'd probably go with Advanced Labyrinth Lord over all the other BX-ish OSR offerings if all things BX got wished out of existence.

TSR Why would anyone want to play 1e?

AD&D 1e is "D&D" in my mind. I still play it, I don't have trouble finding people to play it, and we have a lot of fun doing so. That is the short answer as to why I still play it. I use the more granular attack and save charts that Lakofka published in The Dragon, I run side-based...

AD&D 1E What was so bad about unearthed arcana 1e?

I was .... 16 when it came out, and it made a big splash with some of the groups in my neck of the woods. My group never really used much of it. Later, when I started running AD&D again in the 2000s, I used the new treasure tables, some of the spells (found on scrolls and in found/looted...

    Ernie Gygax Has Passed Away

In 2010, during one of the early Gary Cons, Ernie was kind enough to let me tag along over to his home where we and others talked quite a bit and played the San Juan card game. When Ernie found out I was a Fritz Leiber fan, he handed me a postcard Fritz has sent his mother Mary Gygax. I'm not...

Listening to old-timers describe RP in the 70s and 80s

Yup. I've seen that. The D&D games that I was hard pressed to recognize as the same game I played, for example.

Listening to old-timers describe RP in the 70s and 80s

Started around 1980, though I had been hanging around my older cousins' basement, watching them play a lot in the late 70s. I have the same reaction as you do, fairly often. I also have the "you're full of it, you weren't playing back then" or "playing the goldbox games from SSI in your...

Thanks for posting this. IMO, those Midkemia supplements were some of the most useful additions to the game, published back in the day.

OSR Who Seeks The Black Blade Of The Demon King?

Howdy- I went to look at the dtrpg page for this, and the first bullet point reads: "Unique cinematic three act structure." The grumpy old grognard in me reads that, and says, "Sounds like a railroad." Could you comment on that, and and "cinematic" features, as I don't really know what that...
