Is Helios Rising the Largest Sci-Fi Setting Book Ever?

OH YEAH!?! WHY DON'T YOU COME OVER TO CM AND SAY THAT? ;)

Are we all becoming balance lawyers?

You're misunderstanding me, but that's because I'm doing a crappy job of explaining myself. I'm short on time, so I'll give you a quick answer and try to pick this back up tomorrow. The feats, skills, etc.. were totally planned to add flexibility to the classes. I agree that was the intent...

Are we all becoming balance lawyers?

That's your opinion. How do you balance classes? By making sure the "sum" of their abilities, feats, etc... are equal at a given level across the board. To me, this means all of these bits and pieces like skills, feats, BAB, save, and assoicated stuff that goes along with them are part and...

Old school/new school definitions -- meaningless?

Yeah, that's what I tried and failed to say. Thanks for putting it more succinctly.

Article on Gen Con in Indianapolis Monthly Magazine

I mailed the the Indy Visitors Bereau, and told them I love the city and the welcome mat the downtown businesses put out for us during GenCon. I then told them I wish the local press would get on board and not print insutlting columns. I linked them to the article. We'll see what happens.

    Hexes NOT Squares?

1 square = 3-1/3 feet works well too. It's 3 squares/hexes across for a 10' passageway, and you can put 2 small dudes (like halflings or gnomes) per square.. You know, I'd probably be totally behind the idea of going gridless and measuring.

Good News and Bad News concerning the missing posts

I'm sure I'm not the only one who appreciates that you keep on chipping away at this. Thanks.

Are we all becoming balance lawyers?

I'm calling BS on your BS. Stop projecting your crappy experience onto others. I'm sorry to hear your experience with 1e was bad. Mine wasn't. Time for me to get to work. I'll offer up this blanket statement: I'm not saying 3e sucks. I'm saying the "fair and balanced" aspect of it isn't...

Are we all becoming balance lawyers?

I'm with you. When I was a kid, we couldn't find this book. In retrospect, I'm glad we couldn't.

Are we all becoming balance lawyers?

I'm an expert on the players at my table, to a much larger degree than any designer could ever be. I recognize the effort to make the balance as widely applicable as possible, and 3e succeeds to a degree, better than previous editions, possibly. However, in the end, balance comes down to the...

Are we all becoming balance lawyers?

Not a darn thing. I don't think a 320 page PHB, 320 page DMG, and whatever the MM is the help they need, however. The basic game might be a good entry point, and I realize the DMG II attempts to help, but having to buy another book to get help for new DMs might hamper more than help. Hey...

Are we all becoming balance lawyers?

Married, 3 kids, 1.5 jobs. I understand. To me, the 320 pages of the PHB, the associated mods that go along with feats, skills, various situational mods, the time it takes to create NPCs, and all of the other stuff present in 3e which brings the balance to the table does not make it easier for...

Are we all becoming balance lawyers?

Hence my qualifier of "primary beneficiaries". I should have said, "those who benefit most". I agree, and understand what you are saying, and I'll say this applies doubly so to organzied play and convention games with strangers. I don't need to imagine those debates, I've expereinced them...

How to dissect Steading of the Hill Giant Chief?

That's where my 1e GH game is going. They are slapping around the slavelords now, and will soon find the link to G1, but will need some sidebar stuff to beef up in levels before they hit it. I think I'll send them up for some recon in the Horned Society/Bandit Kingdoms area. I plan on running...

Old school/new school definitions -- meaningless?

I see what you are saying quasi, and agree to a large extent. Individual experience and expectations cause what "old school" means to be entirely too subjective, and requires a ton of disclaimers and qualification to truly clarify what it means from a particular point of view. Hence, to a...

Are we all becoming balance lawyers?

Screw that. Balance schmalance. Older editions were as balanced as the DM. All this talk of balance in 3e is to compensate for DMs who cannot maintain this balance at their table. Their are many reasons for this: inexperience behind the screen and really crafty rule twisting players being...

    Hexes NOT Squares?

Though I lack wargamer roots, I love hexes. Squares are for munchkins. as far as hexes and 4e, who cares? I mean really? If we can play/adapt any edition of D&D to hexes or squares, it doesn't matter what they use in the book. Your friend is nuts if he thinks using hexes to cut off 3e...

OSRIC: something for the old schoolers

FWIW, it's a steal for $5.00 Joe, I damn near decided to run this instead of what I have planned at GenCon, but since you've already seen the Shroom, you'll just have to be killed in some other way. ;)

What pre-3E D&D book are you using most in your 3.X game?

Almost identical here, though I went back to 1e itself when I started up a new GH game.
