You're not the first to try to please everyone all of the time. I salute your efforts, but I think you're tilting at windmills to a large degree. There is no substitute for experience. No amount of game balance, ability tweaking, and proper assignment of CR is going to change that.

I'm of a similar mind. I've seen/owned much of the post gygax gh stuff, and it just doesn't do it for me. And not because "it's not the way Gary intended it to be" or other such nonsense. I just don't like it. '83 boxed set is all I need, and just about all I want for GreyHawk.

Wonder if that is still the case. I imagine it depends on the intended market and number of units shipped, etc... I seem to recall the Wilderlands box set broke even. I wonder how the Mongoose boxed sets for Conan did?

Just here to chime in and say TB is correct. Conan is a great game. It does a great job of capturing the Hyborian feel both thematically and mechanically. You could easilly run a Hyborian game using IH. The advantage of the Conan RPG over IH for such a game is the magic system, which feels...

It can be tracked down on many of the abandonware sites. Google for "Abandonware" and you should find it an many other old-school games out there. You also might checkout DOSBox, which is a DOS emulator which runs under windows, to run these games on. Many of them do not do well natively, IME.
