    Whither the Ultimatum?

If they follow suit and do what they did with Avalon Hill (purchased in '98 for $6M), they'll just sit on it, while letting loose a license every once in a great while (Valley Game's reprint of Titan, and Multi-Man's ASL line being examples.)

D&D 5E (2014) Has 5E Restored or Diminished Your Faith in WotC?

Well, except for a fistful of minis, I've not been very interested in pretty much anything WotC has put out for D&D since....uh.....2004. I played the 4e gameday demo, thumbed through some of the books at the gamestore, put them back on the shelf, and said, "Maybe 5e.", and haven't looked back...

    Rampant Anti-Groggism

I think he's right, Mark. I mean, people still argue about whether Psionics, Weapon vs. AC, and Weapons Speeds "belong" in 1e. There won't ever be more than "large minority" consensus. Modularity is the only way WotC has a chance of making 80% of the market happy. I just hope for WotC's...

D&D 5E (2014) 5E is attempting to recalibrate our expectations

Speaking only of my own experience as a long time 1e AD&D DM/player who ran and played 3e for about 5 years along the way, this really is a YMMV situation. My cousin ran a very gritty "magic scarce" campaign in OD&D/AD&D for years. There were no generic +1 swords, etc...very gritty, very...

What kind of gamer are you?

Meh. I don't need to prove my superiority....it should be apparent to all. ;)

What's your favorite edition of D&D (so far)?

AD&D certainly is not without faults, but I love it, warts and all. And there is nothing wrong with nostalgia, at all. I'm just tired of people claiming that nostalgia is the only reason guys like me keep playing it. I'm pretty shocked that at 305 votes, 50% of the voters on this site say...

    Please critique this idea

I'd say you have a very good handle on how internet forums work.

What's your favorite edition of D&D (so far)?

Not in my case. 1e AD&D is what I've been playing all along, with the occasional 3e and B/X side trip.

    Who's going to Gen Con?

I am! Over 9 years running!

    Rampant Anti-Groggism

Meh. Wouldn't know. Too busy repainting my lead minis and re-inking my 35 year old gamescience dice. Besides, in a few years, we'll be declared an endangered species and qualify for federal protection.

Most loved or hated NPC of all time?

I'm betting Obmi and/or Eclavdra, will show up on the hate lists for a lot of 1e AD&D-era folks.

    Old Appearances in Dragon's Forum!

Never had anything published in The Dragon, I was more of a Penthouse Forum contributor.

What are you working on? (Playing, GMing, desigining, etc)

I'm working on an even more human-centric greyhawk, based out of the '83 boxed set. Picture the surface elves more like the xenophobic, menacing elves from Poul Anderson's The_Broken_Sword, the dwarves being greasier, greedier double dealers, the gnomes as dark-humoured tricksters and the...

    WotC's Annual Xmas Layoffs

Steve Winter edited some of my favorite early 80's TSR stuff, including the 1983 Greyhawk boxed set, which next to the AD&D DMG, may be my favorite RPG product of all time. Hope you land on your feet, Steve, wherever you are.

Holy sheepdip - wotc to republish old editions

No way in hell I'd pony up for DDI, even for access to old-school D&D stuff. I've no need to compromise. I own several copies of the AD&D core books, and I've cut apart the MM and PHB, scanned them, and now have PDFs which print really well (no, you can't have a copy, don't ask, I didn't do...

    Mearls: The core of D&D

Here is the list: When everything on that list has been re-defined and re-valued, what common ground really remains? You know, I have this axe which has been in the family since 1750. Sure, its on its 4th head and 6th handle, but you know, its the same pre-American Revolution axe, right...

    What would you play?

I'd play anything but 4e, really (though I didn't mark BECMI, 2e or 3.0). Not that I have hate-on for 4e, its that I don't own anything 4e, and I'm not buying any more fantasy rpgs for a long time, given the number of FRPGs on my physical and virtual shelves which have never seen any table...

    Your gaming experience...

I've got 2 distinct phases of gaming. The first is from the fall of 1981 to the winter of 1986/87. 1) Started in the fall of '81. 2) Primary System: Moldvay/AD&D mashup. Some of us had Moldvay Basic books, some had AD&D books. We used AD&D HD, alignment, and weapon selection, but used the...
