    Staple Fantasy Races

That would be my answer, too :).

Do you prefer D20 or To Hit and Save Tables

Tedious is not the same as complex. The idea behind tables is that they basically contain all the information. You perform a few basic tasks and then simply follow the tables. You don't have to learn many formulas or consider lots of different subsystems, like in D&D 3.x. Please, don't see this...

    Arcana Evolved Spell Treasury

Weren't the spells that didn't make the migration too similar to some of the SRD spells in order to consider them for inclusion into the Spell Treasury? Anyway, the Spell Treasury contains more than enough spells to make the spellcasters happy. Though the Greenbond might also like Akashic Nodes...

Do you prefer D20 or To Hit and Save Tables

I think that this is a misconception. More tables doesn't equal more complexity. Rolemaster uses tons of tables but isn't very complex. D&D 3.5 is much more complex even though it doesn't use tables during combat. This said, I prefer the d20 way. I don't want to look up stuff on tables during...

Would you be satisifed with d20 as your only RPG? [Ties into RyanD's blog entry.]

It's also the way how the blog was meant. This follows from this paragraph: This means that True20, C&C, Conan or M&M are considered d20 in the context of this topic. As far as the original question is concerned, I'd have to say No, even if my gaming is pretty much centered on d20. Sometimes...

So when should a publisher ditch d20 and develop their own system?

I've seen that announcement. I think that those ridiculous prices OOP d20 Star Wars titles went for on ebay were not only noticed by potential buyers ;).

So when should a publisher ditch d20 and develop their own system?

I understand that. However, we have a change by 10,000 in, let's say, 3 hours. At this rate, the book wouldn't stay at #25,000 for long, if it just sold once per week. If this were true, D&D books would also sell extremely poorly at amazon.

So when should a publisher ditch d20 and develop their own system?

I cannot really believe that. The numbers fluctuate too much to suggest that. Now, the rank is #35,420. When I wrote my post, it was at roughly #19,000.

    PHB2 vs. Arcana Evolved

Sure, a thread is self-selecting. But that's not really important in this regard. During that time, Monte Cook was mostly known as one of the authors of D&D 3E, and most of the activity on his boards were rules questions, as he wrote the DMG. One day, he started the thread, asking what...

    PHB2 vs. Arcana Evolved

I don't think that thread still exists. That was on Monte's old board, in 2002. A real thread monster ;).

So when should a publisher ditch d20 and develop their own system?

I agree. Also KotOR was like a fountain of youth for the IP and brought many disenchanted players back into the fold. Most films or TV series have only very limited background, compared to what you need for a successful RPG. There must be some room for development, otherwise the game will get...

So when should a publisher ditch d20 and develop their own system?

At least at amazon, the game still seems to outsell any nWOD title. Only the current Exalted title sells better. Of course, D&D is in a different league. Nevertheless, that's not bad for a game that's more than a year old. If this means that only games modeled after TV shows sell (except D&D)...

So when should a publisher ditch d20 and develop their own system?

There is a "World of Warcraft" TRPG out there. Which probably explains the "much".

So when should a publisher ditch d20 and develop their own system?

I agree that, nowadays, most stores don't stock much besides D&D and, sometimes, WoD. My point was that the "d20" logo seems to have lost its promotional effect. Then a disadvantage, like telling people that they have to buy a book like d20 Modern or d20 Future in order to play the game, easily...

So when should a publisher ditch d20 and develop their own system?

Well, here it obviously is an "actual play" thread. There are enough games around that are shock-full of Star Wars and Star Trek material, they just don't say so. None of them sells. Material that doesn't come with the original names of persons and objects doesn't have any commercial worth...

So when should a publisher ditch d20 and develop their own system?

There has an "Actual Play" thread using Dogs in the Vineyard's Firefly adaptation been started on rpg.net just today :). Well, OGC principally just considers mechanics and some D&D monsters. This doesn't touch any IP from a TV series. And there have been enough examples of OGL declarations that...

Poll: How much 3rd party do you use?

The first two parties are WotC (as owner of the d20 system) and you (as a user of WotC's d20 system). I voted 50%, mostly because the PHB/SRD is most often - though not always - the backbone of the game.

So when should a publisher ditch d20 and develop their own system?

I didn't imply anything else. I said the same thing when the Origins award came out, and I didn't hear much good about the game, either. However, this was an example where a new system didn't hurt sales. Unfortunately, it's very hard to tell now whether the line died because i) it was only...

Would the D&D brand manager please stand up.

He left WotC a long time ago.

And got the "Best Game" fan award at Origins.
