A Good Source for Info on "Medieval" Ports & Sea Trade?

As we are now in the field of the not quite so free stuff :D: I found the book Medieval Trade in the Mediterranean World very interesting. It contains translated original documents and gives a good overview about what was traded, all the fees involved or how the stuff was paid for. The book in...

    Artesia from players

To be fair, with a completely new group of D&D players, it took me also 4 hours to make their characters. The point is that they want to know what they are doing. That's why I now prefer pre-generated characters for beginners :). In the case of Artesia, character generation will also deliver...

    Dwarves don't sell novels

I used Tolkien as an example of literature that influenced the D&D game (the choice of races comes to mind) but is a counterpoint against your unwillingness to accept changes in racial descriptions in D&D over time. I just pointed out that D&D's sources saw similar changes and are as much...

The only Actual Play thread I know of is this one.

Favorite System that Never Caught On

If you think of extended contests, the authors of QuestWorlds thought of either dropping or replacing them. Most people experience them as some kind of mini-game without much connection to what you actually want to achieve. Beware of experienced poker players :D.

Why do Dwarves drink Whiskey or Ale?

Don't spoil the wood elves of Tamriel. They are the most interesting elves I ever met. They protect the trees, that's why they only eat meat and drink fermented meat. They eat their dead family members. They eat all the foes they kill. They are part of a hivemind. Their capital is a gigantic...

Favorite System that Never Caught On

Most people don't like to lose. And in order to love the Dying Earth RPG, you have to love losing in an interesting way :).

What language is the Common of our world?

In my example for Standard Mandarin, they type in the official transliteration (phonemic notation and transcription to Roman script) on a normal keyboard. This has been standardized since 1979 in the PR China and is also the official transliteration in Singapore. My colleague says that it's very...

What language is the Common of our world?

Not only this, but also the standardized education. The development of a national school system with standardized topics nowdays does not only eliminate most of the still living dialects, but also slows down the evolution of language.

    Opening can o' worms

I thought you are just not allowed to have anything published in the entry period? I actually like your splitting idea very much. This would make sure that d20 games (subsuming D&D, d20 and OGL) and non-d20 games are treated equally.

How cheesy are the names of your locations?

If those are entries on an elven war map, it looks fine :).

Why do Dwarves drink Whiskey or Ale?

But that's for wood elves :D.

Favorite System that Never Caught On

I agree. But, in part, I blame the writers/editors :D. HeroWars was an organizational catastrophe, and HeroQuest could still be better organized. And the silly examples don't help, either.

    Opening can o' worms

Actually, I wouldn't change too much regarding the categories. Nearly all of them worked nicely. I'm also fine with products appearing in several categories, because some of them are really, e.g., half rulebook and half adventure (some of the recent Necromancer titles come to mind). I would like...

What language is the Common of our world?

My Chinese colleagues have no problem whatsoever with quickly typing their Chinese character letters on a standard US keyboard. They just type everything in Pinyin, and the computer changes this to Chinese characters, as you described in your Japanese example.

A Good Source for Info on "Medieval" Ports & Sea Trade?

If you also want to stay halfway realistic, don't make the typical fantasy city error and place the harbor facing the sea. Even if you don't have large tides in your setting, you will want to protect the normally quite small ships from the elements. This means, put the harbor into a protected...

    Dwarves don't sell novels

As someone used a "Full Frontal Nerdity" strip in a different thread, I had to think of this one: I actually like the explanation :D.

    Dwarves don't sell novels

Well, at least LotR tends to win "best book of all times" polls :). Anyway, I'm certainly no advocate of limiting fantasy to LotR-inspired works. Quite the opposite. Frex, I love Jack Vance stories, if you cannot tell already from my handle :).
