    Using Forcecage defensively?

A powerful lich (level 19-20 arcane caster) is going to be faced off against a large and powerful party of players a few levels below the lich. If the lich has a round or 3 to prepare, could it use barred version of Forcecage as a defensive means of stopping the party's melee attackers, who...

which module was this, by the way? could it have been a Shadow Conjuration instead?

    I want to believe

If you are feeling the head after it was decapitated, then it was not a permanent image or programmed image. A permanent or programmed image is not designed to fool anybody up close for a long time. Interacting is any sort of interaction - be it combat, talking, casting a spell on it, etc...

    D&D 3.x 3.5E Death Knight?

good point - i recently put the vampire template on a fighter type, and the fighter stayed at his level 6 hit points, but his CR went from 6 to 14! So, it was 60 or so hit points for a CR:14 monster. That is one good spell against a CR:14 party.

    D&D 3.x 3.5E Death Knight?

Thanks - my mistake for looking under "D" instead of the templates in the back.

    Protection vs Scrying/Teleportation

Spell Compendium has the "Anticipate Teleport" spell and the Greater version. The first spell lasts hours per level and will give you a 1 round warning of incoming teleporters, including their exact location. The Greater version gives you a 3 round warning... There is also the psionic...

    D&D 3.x 3.5E Death Knight?

Is there a Death Knight in 3.5? I looked through 3 different Monster Manuals, plus Libris Mortis, and could not find one. Is it called something different in 3E? Thanks

Good lower level spells to bother a higher level party?

Agree on "Mark of Doom" from above. Stinking Cloud is useful for funneling the good guys, as you have to keep making saves if you stay in the cloud... and, if you're nauseated, you can't do much of anything. Plus, if you fail that first save, you stay nauseated for a few rounds afterwards.

The evil horde on the march - what defenses would they have?

just curious - did all your crazy preparations work out ok? what happened? I know no matter how much I normally plan & plot, the players always throw a monkey wrench or three into the works.

The evil horde on the march - what defenses would they have?

perhaps a few casters mounted on the dire vultures to deal with possibly attacks from the air. A few dispel magics placed on flyers could be potentially devastating if they are 800 feet up like you say. maybe a marrash shamen/adept as well? for protections, have some things cast onto items...

    Running a marilith - strategy

I don't think that is a valid manuever. It's all attack or all disarm, unless I'm reading the rules incorrectly.

    Running a marilith - strategy

I think a violent thrust tossing 3-4 PCs into the blade barrier is a pretty good use of TK. With 5 PCs and 2 NPCs, though, I'm not sure how useful disarming one opponent would be, unless only 1 is engaged in melee with the marilith... which may be near suicidal if it can do a full attack on the PC.

yes, it wants out of the circle... BSing also sounds good.

    Running a marilith - strategy

She will have her unholy aura up, which I believe improves her regular AC and her touch AC, as well as gives her +4 to her saves and spell resistance (though, I don't think it's a double resistance with her SR already at 25...) The magic circle can only be broken if the stones that created it...

    Running a marilith - strategy

I would think that while the Wall of Stones were being cast, the marilith would continually be slapping them down... My guess is that the melee fighters will rush to engage, the cleric casts prayer the first round, the psion casts a defensive spell... next round, melee attacks, the cleric...

    Running a marilith - strategy

The water idea might work if the area was more limited, but I'm not sure they can "conjure" up something that can contain that much water. If the circle she is in has a 70 foot radius, that means it has a circumference = 70*2*pi, or about 420 feet. I would think the party cleric would tend to...

    Running a marilith - strategy

Thanks - Improved Multi-weapon Fighting is pretty deadly for a marilith... as she would go from 4 attacks with her primary sword and 5 attacks with her off-handed swords to 4+10. Even if she hits with "only" half those attacks, it is still 7 hits for 2d6+9 on two hits and 2d6+4 on five hits...

    Running a marilith - strategy

Is that a legit manuever for a marilith? Say, use its primary longsword for its 4 attacks, and then use its other 5 arms to attempt to disarm the 3 or 4 PCs and NPCs that are attempting melee with it? And, I believe the marilith only gets repeat attacks with its primary longsword, while the...

I should also say the marilith is in a heavily overgrown/forested type of area as well.
