How do we actually play the game?

Remember how Robin Laws wrote that book you had to pay for, Robin's Laws of Good Game Mastering, but then they got Robin Laws to write for the 3.5 DMG and most of that stuff got in there? I figure maybe DMG III or IV will have up-to-date skill challenge technology once the community has figured...

Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder: Encounter Design Simplified

10-1/3. 1 minute 18 seconds including the time it took me to go get the DMG. All you do is look on any line of the table on p.38. I like 8th level. A CR 2 is 300 XP. A CR 3 is 400 XP. Add them all up. 600 - (2) CR2 800 - Worgs (2) CR3 800 - Manticore (1) CR5 1500 - Hobgoblin Veterans (5)...

How did initiative rules make casters stronger in 3E?

That changed in 3.5, didn't it? Was it a big deal before that? And you're not saying that was a good way to balance spellcasters, just that it was a balancing factor that was so subtle no one noticed it being removed and thus couldn't compensate for it. Or does anyone think it would be good...

How did initiative rules make casters stronger in 3E?

I can't wait for Mearls to explain it -- he said at the end of this post: What does he mean?

Does an Imp get any benefit from his alternate form?

But in this case it doesn't matter because the SRD also says meaning that an Imp who's a Boar has special qualities damage reduction 5/good or silver, darkvision 60 ft., fast healing 2, immunity to poison, resistance to fire 5, but not low-light vision or scent.

Does an Imp get any benefit from his alternate form?

I found it so much of a pain in the butt to figure out Alternate Form from the SRD that I made a table of what you gain, lose, and retain/don't gain here. Edit: I just wanted to warn anyone finding this thread via Google that the rest of this thread is an argument about the authority of Rules...

    D&D 3.x Knowledge Skills and the Monster Manual: 3.5 & 4E

My first post didn't make sense: it said "10 + CR," but it gave flat DCs. And I think they were too low. Here's the new table: • DC (CR + 15): Identify the monster by name and creature type • DC (CR + 20): Know the monster's vulnerabilities and defenses. Identify a monster that’s only...

    D&D 3.x Knowledge Skills and the Monster Manual: 3.5 & 4E

I got an idea from Herzog in http://www.enworld.org/forum/d-d-3rd-edition-rules/259253-does-imp-get-any-benefit-his-alternate-form.html : If you beat the DC by 10 you can tell a boar might be something polymorphed. Or is that too hard on the Disguise skill?

Does an Imp get any benefit from his alternate form?

I thought of another real use for it: while in disguise, he can use his Detect Magic/Detect Good abilities to size up the party. Although again, that would be even easier while invisible.

    D&D 3.x Knowledge Skills and the Monster Manual: 3.5 & 4E

I am not running a true "points of light" setting; there is enough commerce and culture that I have trouble deciding exactly what is common knowledge. I mean, in our world, everyone knows gasoline is flammable and not to throw water on it -- especially firefighters. In a world with vampires...

Best way to steal something from the PCs in combat?

I could give the Imp some Disable Device skill to spend a round busting the latch on the helmet; as long as I gave him him the alternate form "Insane Skill Monkey." :) He should be able to find something else smaller and more liftable because the magic of the temple of Greed (formerly Charity)...

    D&D 3.x Knowledge Skills and the Monster Manual: 3.5 & 4E

The SRD for 3.5 just says "A successful check allows you to remember a bit of useful information about that monster. For every 5 points by which your check result exceeds the DC, you recall another piece of useful information." The 4th Edition Monster Manual makes this a much more defined part...

Best way to steal something from the PCs in combat?

My current module has an Imp called Atnoseep, the Scion of Greed so I thought it would be cool if he tried to steal the party's magic items. My idea was that he would fight the party and then as a "bloodied trigger" when he got to half hit points, he would try to steal a Helm of Comprehend...

Does an Imp get any benefit from his alternate form?

I was just wondering why the module I'm running had the imp starting in boar form. Tell you the truth I think it might have been to trick a druid into wasting a speak with animals.

Does an Imp get any benefit from his alternate form?

So he's a boar. He has worse initiative, lower AC, he doesn't get Scent, even if it gives him a surprise round he'd have to use it up transforming to his regular form. What good is it? Unless he prefers looking like a boar to being invisible, I'd just go around invisible all the time.

Would I be missing the point if I gave the Adept class higher spell levels?

Looking at this another way, this is like giving them the feat That seems like it would be broken. Would it be possible to balance that feat?

Would I be missing the point if I gave the Adept class higher spell levels?

It seems like the problem is this: high level spells are too good to give them out at low CR even if you only get one. So maybe the answer is to do the opposite of what Mustrum suggested before: Give adepts the high level spells, but give them lousy save DCs and low caster levels. Now they'll...

Would I be missing the point if I gave the Adept class higher spell levels?

I was worried about too much loot. A wand for a second level spell is 4500 gp, a ninth level treasure. I'd have to go with scrolls. The reason I haven't is I feared the caster level check rules, and I didn't want to encourage my PCs to go out and buy high level spell scrolls to solve...

Would I be missing the point if I gave the Adept class higher spell levels?

Thanks for finding that rule tucked away so far from the writeup of the classes themselves. I still think it's ridiculous to say a 10th-level adept with level 3 spells is anywhere near a 9th-level cleric with level 5 spells. OK, that's a convincing argument for making the adepts' CR (level -...

Would I be missing the point if I gave the Adept class higher spell levels?

They got that right. "Weaker fighter" doesn't mean "gets a commoner's BAB every other level," it means "gets the main thing about being a fighter, but less of everything else." It's not really fair, is it? They have a fifteen-minute adventuring day lifespan, they're like mayflies with nukes...
