I don't get the dislike of healing surges

"Healing Surge" covers a lot of different topics, but people seem to be jumbling them all together, making it hard to tell what it is that they object to exactly. I mean, what is a surge? This is how I see it: 1) The amount of healing received is relative to the max HP of the heal-ee, not the...

    Help with selecting a character:

Two-weapon fighting isn't just feat intensive, the feats also require a high Dex. 15 to start, 17 for Improved, and 19 for Greater.

What is fun about illusions? Fooling the players or the PCs?

I tried the illusionary minions tactic in 3e once, and it was reasonably successful. The players were against an aboleth, who had a few real minions and a bunch of illusionary ones. The players wasted several rounds trying to fight the fake minions before one of them made a Will save. Perhaps it...

Just how many weapons do you use anyway?

    a) remove superior weapons b) remove feats that enhance specific weapons and weapon groups. c) remove weapon-specific class features from the Essentials martial classes. You could go a step further and make all weapons the same, mechanically, but perhaps that's going too far. If the option for...

A (very green) Newbie DM Question

Firstly, DMing is a skill, and you're going to make mistakes. That's okay! There's a lot of different ways to handle this. A good approach IMO is to have a loose outline or structure, and fill in or change the details as the players make decisions. For example, if the player expect to find the...

Have you played with the DDI VT?

The forums are moderated. You can post all sorts of offensive things there, but they won't be up for very long.

    Maximizing attack bonus

If you are using a staff, the Staff Expertise feat will give you an always-on +1 feat bonus to hit that scales with level. If you are using a dagger, Versatile Expertise will give you the same always-on bonus, but it doesn't scale as quickly and has no extra benefits. An Accurate superior...

Have you played with the DDI VT?

Hm, it worked ok for me. That's somewhat annoying. But if you have the full library of WotC art to choose from (as opposed to the current highly limited selection), I don't think it's a huge problem. I wonder if they are afraid that people will upload copyrighted or potentially offensive images.

Have you played with the DDI VT?

You can control individual volumes. I think you click or right click on the "volume" icon near their token on the left side of the screen? Also, I am assuming that the map tile and PC/monster token selections are limited because it's the beta. One fairly foolish design decision regarding the...

    Paladin question

The other important bit to note is that feats or class features that affect one will not affect the other.

Ship combat quickplay (mild spoilers for ZEITGEIST)

I would get rid of the OA-provoking stuff. Actions that are not movement or ranged/area attacks rarely provoke in 4e. The rules look good. I would add some guidelines for ramming; maybe the damage would be by size or a fraction of the ship's HP. I guess the concern is having the game screech...

Tools of Two Trades (Weapliment Expertise) Article Up

I am just disappointed that this was the direction that WotC chose to approach the problem from. They are so damned specific, leaving out all sorts of implement choices or weapons that function as implements (unless you're a warlock, I guess). Just re-publish Versatile Expertise as +1/2/3 to...

Have you played with the DDI VT?

I've played around with it recently. I haven't used any other VTTs, so I don't know how it stacks up to those. What I do know is that I was amazed at how little it did for the DMs or the players. PC importing is okay but not great. Psionic powers just get one section each, meaning you have to...

Confusing wording in Shielding Spirit feat

I would say A, also. "When you use..." is describing the point in time when you use the healing evocation, not some point in the future. The duration then applies to the defense bonus. It's an instantaneous effect that creates a lasting effect. To support B, there would need to be two durations...

Motivations of a winter goddess: any ideas?

What about intermediate steps on the way to perpetual winter? The destruction of important fire creatures (like Imix) or the destruction of the plane of fire itself. Acquisition of artifacts that can help, or destruction of artifacts that can oppose. The soul of a great (something) to serve...

Confused about Gear, where can I find armor and items to reward my players

The compendium isn't that bad. I find that it's more useful than the search functions on most online shops & forums. The real issue, IMO, is the massive amount of items, most of which give piddling bonuses under dubious circumstances. Or are specifically tailored to a particular class, build...

    Ditching OA's, replace with....?

In AD&D, you get a free attack if a foe moves away from you - basically the movement-triggered OA. IIRC, 2e added the withdraw action to allow for safe retreat, but I could be getting different rulesets confused there.

Next year, I'm back to running AD&D

Have you seen the Project Slaughterhouse guidelines by Angry DM? I thought they were an elegant and easy-to-use solution to deal with a monster lair getting resupplied. I'm not sure how to adapt it to AD&D, but I'm sure it could be done, perhaps by counting bodies instead of XP. Schrödinger...

    Ditching OA's, replace with....?

I don't believe that was the original purpose of OAs, which have been around in one form or another since the beginning of the game. Although I suppose 3e expanded their scope in order for spellcasting to be interrupt-able. In any case, OAs do serve a purpose, which is battlefield control. A...
