    q2: am I understanding burst/blast right

Correct. The "close blast 3" is 3x3, and there are no "area blasts".

    q2: am I understanding burst/blast right

Correct. And a "close burst" (instead of an "area burst") would have the creature as the origin square. Almost. The 3x3 block is placed adjacent to the creature, not on top of it. Bursts/blasts was one of the things I really found confusing when I first read the rules. They have similar names...

First post with a question about the crit rule.

Yes, that's correct. The regular damage for the attack is maximized*, and you roll any bonus critical damage as well. * that includes bonus damage from a rogue's sneak attack or a ranger's hunter's quarry.

    Creature Rank vs SOD effects

I like it the general idea of giving important foes some sort of plot-armor. I'm also giving a big thumbs-up to the concept of elites or solos or minions. I was already doing something similar in my 3e games (giving "named" opponents max HP), but they still couldn't really keep up with the...

    Fighting Fury: Crazy Awesome?

Seems legit, if feat-intensive. Considering that a fighter/slayer can spend one feat to get Dex * 1.5 + slayer bonuses to damage on every attack (and dump Strength, and only worry about 1 weapon), I don't see an issue with it.

Star Wars: Dawn of Defiance ends with a bang

The healing issue was one of my main sticking points with the system. Played a few games at low levels, and the PCs had to spend days recuperating after nearly every combat. The other big issue is Use the Force checks vs defense shenanigans. And I did notice that my jedi was pretty useless on a...

Are there real sword fighting tournaments?

There's a group that splintered off of the SCA that has fights with live steel. If the blades are sharpened or not, I don't know. I can't recall the name of the organization right now, unfortunately. EDIT: The group is the Adrian Empire. Thanks Dragonwriter!

D&D 3.x Need help with 3.5 stealthy Sniper

3.5 isn't great at making long-range one-hit-kill snipers. Generally one pumps up the damage through sneak attack (which only works at close range) or skirmish damage from the scout class (which requires constant movement) or lots of attacks (which you can't do with a crossbow). You could maybe...

Excising, Severely Limiting, or Strictly Organizing Feats

Good question. I think feats that expand character options are good ones. A lot of the 3e Eberron feats qualify, although most of them are tied into the setting. Dragonmark feats give a character access to one or more spells 1/day. The druid feats had various effects depending on the sect, like...

Advice - Fixing the Escalating Numbers

Yeah, that's high-level 3e for you. Combats tend to last 2-3 rounds (getting shorter as the levels go up) and take about 30-45 minutes per round at the top end, IME. That was with a group of 4 players. You could push everyone to have spell descriptions at hand or memorized, have buffs written...

Excising, Severely Limiting, or Strictly Organizing Feats

I don't know that I'd want to get rid of feats entirely, but I would like to see (a) fewer feats overall, because the feat bloat makes it a chore to choose feats and (b) feats that do cool stuff and not conditional little bonuses (or always-on little bonuses) I want feats that make the...

    Minimum Enhancement Bonus

The maximum "plus" in 4e is +6. But yes, starleather is at least a level 26 magic item with an AC bonus of +10 (+4 for armor, +6 for magic).

    Anybody else have this problem?

I agree with Crothian that it's part of your job as DM to keep the group from getting unruly. If person A cuts person B off, tell person A (nicely) to let B finish. "A" will probably learn to interrupt less over time, but you as the DM need to set the clear boundary first.

Improvisational combat: pg. 42 not good enough

Offering guidelines to a DM to handle unusual situations is never a bad thing, unless the guidelines are actually going to derail the game or something. Experienced DMs can do their own thing. New DMs will find the tools useful for keeping the game moving with a minimum of interruption or...

The Walking Dead 2.13 - Besides the Dying Fire (season finale - SPOILERS)

Eh, I don't see how removing Lori somehow corrects the collision course that Rick and Shane were on. They both wanted to be the boss, they both thought they were the only one who could lead the group and have it survive. And Shane was willing to murder his best friend to get his way. The best...

    Help! Is my player cheating?

That site only contains home-brew stuff for 4e. Do a compendium search for Dvati and you get nothing, which means it was not published by WotC.

The Walking Dead 2.13 - Besides the Dying Fire (season finale - SPOILERS)

Yeah, I think she would have gotten over Rick defending himself against a homicidal Shane. But having your little boy shoot the zombie of his "uncle", that's just horrifying (and another fine example of nobody keeping an eye on the damn kid!).

He's pulling your leg on that one, at least. There's no such thing.

The Walking Dead 2.13 - Besides the Dying Fire (season finale - SPOILERS)

Yeah, some spoiler tags would be nice for those of us that haven't read the comic. Good episode, I thought, although I too noted how it seemed like everyone had suddenly become master marksmen. The only thing that bugged me (aside from what is the purpose of having zombie "pets") is, who the...
