Rogues automatically suceed at Hard Tasks

I feel it makes them competitive with Knock and Invisibility. Maybe not Charm Person, but that's always been an overpowered spell.

    D&D 5E (2014) 5e/Next Cosmology

I don't want the "Great Wheel", I preferred 4e's base cosmology--it's closer to what I was working on in the later days of 3e. What has me worried, though, is that the Great Wheel will be written into the mechanics like it was in 3e, so that you have to remake various spells to use anything else.

    D&D 5E (2014) I want a return to long duration spells in D&D Next.

He was talking about maximized empowered buffs, that turn that 2-5 into a flat +7. I still think you have a point, though. And back to the main discussion at hand, I'm not a fan of numeric durations. I prefer a distinction based on drama--"until the end of the encounter/scene", not a number in...

What does "Support" for a play style mean to you?

Other: I don't have to rewrite substantial parts of the mechanics to play in my style, but only tweak a few settings. EG: I greatly dislike alignment, and would like to be able to safely ignore it without having to rewrite clerics and paladins. That implies that either there are multiple...

    Teleportation

Teleportation is probably one of those things that should be a "dial"--maybe two, one each for short- and long-distance. I'm not fond of the risk-roll style long-distance teleport; I actually like the "fixed gate" style; it blocks scry-and-fry without simply saying no or having a % chance of a...

    Teleportation

"Aren't blink dogs essentially a form of Hounds of Tindalos?" Um...no. First of all, they're actually canines, instead of an otherworldly something that happens to be less uncanine than unanything else. Second, when last I checked, blink dogs had a default alignment of lawful good--they're...

    Testing a theory

4e-preferring player here. I prefer arcane casters and fighters, and I (used to) worry about balance in both cases--I don't want to short other players, and I don't like being shorted myself.

    Specialist Fighters

My own suggestion is almost identical to BobTheNob's, above. Specialization as in "I'm only at my best with this weapon here" is not good. The math ends up designed around it and you end up competent with that weapon and not with others. Instead, I think "Weapon Specialization" should be a...

My group and I don't want a "Sub-System" for dealing with out of combat scenarios.

I'm a little confused here--are you asking that skill challenges (or other mechanics like them) be clearly marked as just one of may options for the DM? Or do you want them denied to those of us who like them, or use them as a starting point to do things our own way?

So it's the old "Edition War" excuse to dismiss people?

...after reading this thread, I would like to re-offer my suggestion that we collectively declare war against GURPS instead of fighting amongst each other. :p

Took Enemy Fire in Edition Wars

Can't XP, etc. And I hate to say it, but maybe the community does need an outside enemy to prevent us from making enemies of each other. Maybe we should collectively declare war against GURPs or something.... :)

The Negator; the Spell-Breaker; The Mage-Slayer...

Maybe instead of a simple counterspell system (as others have said, it can lead to tedium), we should look at some kind of way for spells to interact and interfere with each other in interesting ways beyond just works/doesn't work. Say, a sleet storm spell makes aoe fire spells into...

    [Opinion] I Don't Like Fortune-In-The-Middle

Like others have said, "prone" doesn't always have to map exactly to "lying down". A "prone" ooze is too scattered to get things done properly, and has to take a moment to pull itself back together. Maybe "prone" should be called something else, and we call prone an example of that something...

Magic Vs AC is Very Poor Reasoning

Traditionally, the wizard had a truly awful attack bonus. Letting them go for a much easier number meant that spells that required an attack roll were actually useful, instead of a waste of a slot. And for the record, I approve of including armor in most/all magical AC attacks. Those that...

Spells that should be rituals or cantrips.

I'm not talking about making it a restricted skill. I agree that anything that can reasonably considered a skill should be available to anyone who takes the appropriate background/theme/skill training/whatever 5e offers for skills. However, skill use is apparently the rogue's shtick, and I don't...

Spells that should be rituals or cantrips.

It would depend on the power of the Knock spell and/or the cost of using it as a ritual. Cheap ritual and old-school autosuccess? Sorry, rogue, you aren't needed any more. Higher price and/or not much (or even any) better than a rogue? I could see that much more.

Spells that should be rituals or cantrips.

As long as ritual use has a real cost to it, I would agree with this. Maybe there should even be ritual versions of the shorter-duration spells with longer durations and a higher cost.

Spells that should be rituals or cantrips.

As a one-off, it would probably be fine. It was the original version with a duration that I had issues with.

Spells that should be rituals or cantrips.

I'll agree with most of these, but isn't Bless a short duration effect? A few rounds at most. Also, IIRC, Spectral Hand allows you to deal touch spells at range. Probably too good for a cantrip. Sent from my A200 using Tapatalk 2

It's called Prestidigitation. I know you were joking, but I've actually heard it called a "little wish". Sent from my A200 using Tapatalk 2
