Need help dealing with a melee character in a predominately ranged combat setting...

It's dragonstar. Play a soulmech barbarian with wheels and/or a jetpack, a massive strength, a keenblade falchion (or similar high damage weapon). Take combat reflexes and the feat that lets you follow an opponent taking a 5' step. The character should also do whatever is necessary to get rings...

    Show me your clerics!

I don't know that Cleave is quite as campaign dependent as all that. (Great Cleave, OTOH, I think I'd only recommend very occasionally and only then for specific characters in specific campaigns). There is a bit of middle ground between hordes of bodyguards and one or two big monsters. Against...

    Show me your clerics!

Some good and some bad in these comments: Let's go through them: While, if it were my character, I would have a wisdom 15, and a lower dex, I don't think that the lower wisdom is all that bad in this case. A. With craft wondrous item, access to periapts of wisdom is pretty much guaranteed. B...

    Show me your clerics!

4 Clerics I've played and one that I've seen played for reference Most are 28 point buy (the Shadowbane Inquisitor was built on 36 points) The melee cleric: Half-orc Bbn1 /Cleric (Kord) 13 Domains: Strength and Competition Str 18, Dex 14, Con 14, Int 6, Wis 14 (+all level based increases)...

Fiendish Codex II: Assassin devil CR 11?

The Fiendish Codex II web preview is available. Part of it is a new monster: the assassin devil: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ex/20061207a&page=5 Is it just me or is the assassin devil significantly more than the CR 11 it is billed at? I know that characters of an equivalent level...

    OOTS 388 is up

For my part, I never played Final Fantasy much (except for one of the really early ones on my brother's gameboy which I might have got 1/3 of the way through). I was able to get at least a little bit of the joke though. It's funny as long as Rich doesn't make a habit of it.

How do you have a mentor travel with a group of PC's and NOT steal their spotlight?

The essential problem here is not limited to the mentor scenario. It comes up any time you have a skilled and competent NPC with the PCs. How do the PCs travel with a higher level NPC without having that NPC steal their thunder? Solution 1: The NPC is not capable of stealing the PCs' thunder...

    HP: how many per level?

I usually play max at first level and half+1 thereafter. D4=3hp, d6=4hp, d8=5hp, d10=6hp, d12=7hp per level. In most of the home games I play (we have several DMs in the group and rotate through campaigns), the other DMs use 75% (I think we're supposed to alternate rounding up or down or...

"Out of the Frying Pan"- Book IV - Into the Fire [STORY HOUR COMPLETED - 12/25/06]

Now this has the feel of finality. It's been a good ride and I look forward to seeing how it ends.

Is the barbarian too front loaded?

Don't forget Bbn 2. It makes multiclass penalties easier to avoid (up to level 3 in any non-prestige class), buys uncanny dodge, and speeds progression for Improved Uncanny Dodge, in addition to all the benefits of Bbn 1. After that, it slows down considerably. Count the number of characters...

When does an NPC pay full price?

To start off with, you don't necessarily want economics to apply to magic item sales in the game. Who's the idiot buying +2 halfplate at 5000gp, for instance? They could have a lower armor check penalty, a higher armor bonus, a clear upgrade path, and more cash in their pocket by buying +1...

    What feat for my character?

I'll join the chorus for Cleave--IME, it's quite useful even against groups of 2-5 creatures. In the event that you're not into that however, Iron Will is a solid choice for nearly any fighter type. Close Quarters Fighting is also quite useful when you go up against foes with Improved Grab...

"Out of the Frying Pan"- Book IV - Into the Fire [STORY HOUR COMPLETED - 12/25/06]

Out of curiousity, what was Martin's player doing during all of this. Did you intersperse his (already told) story with the story now playing out (everyone has their own scenes) or was his scene already done with by now? If so, who did he end up running? As you can see, I'm a bit curious about...

    New FAQ 23/11/06 [Merged]

For my part, I think the meta-magic feat rod is a very good ruling. To do otherwise would allow wizards to prepare metamagicked spells in normal level spell slots and then use pearls of power to recover the metamagicked spells. Recall an empowered fireball with a 3rd level pearl? Recall a...

    Do scenarios need a BBEG?

The OP can speak for himself (and apparently has spoken quite a bit), but, actually, gangs, viking raiding parties, pirate ships, bandit camps, and wolf-packs being local anarcho-democratic autocracies makes plenty of sense to me. Sure, there's a leader who probably rules with an iron fist, but...

    D&D Miniatures and Heroclix together?

If heroclix are the same scale as Mageknight, the short answer is: yes, they would look funny together. Mageknight bases are something like 1 1/4"-1 1/2" diameter--just enough overhang that you can't really tell what box their in, but not enough that they can clearly be used for large minis...

Wizards are supposed to be rich, right?

I don't know. Fabricating alchemist's fire is easy with a half-way decent craft alchemy check and you can fabricate a LOT of it. At a minimum profit (assuming sell for half) of 25gp per six 1 pint vials, you can make quite a bit of money per crafting.

New "What sort of RPG player are you?" poll (this one by Charles Ryan)

The second try, I netted: You scored as Tactician. The Tactician enjoys opportunities to think his way through complex problems, usually those of the battlefield. He prefers realistic (or at least internally consistent and logical) rules and settings. He likes to be able to picture a scene...
