This might have been a simple misunderstanding of the pair of vowels "OE." In names such as Groenig and Koenig, the correct pronunciation of the first syllable is "grae" and "kae." Though I cannot remember the way it was pronounced in the Lynch movie, I think that may help - at least somewhat...
