I like to remind people that dragonborn originally appeared in 3.5E, even if they were somewhat different from their later implementations.

I'd think of a "trivia" ability as being a lot like bardic knowledge, in that it's basically there to have an in-character reason for the GM to be able to give exposition to the players (ideally if and when they ask for it or if they're stuck and need a gentle nudge to get moving again).

I thought I read back in (the original publication of) Playing at the World that psionics in D&D was also supposed to be a nod to the people who wanted to use magic points instead of Vancian spellcasting...but I'm not completely certain I'm remembering correctly.

Ideas like this remind of an old article in Dragon magazine about the language families in the Forgotten Realms. I can't recall what its title was or what issue it was in, but it was quite a lot of fun.

It's not quite the same as being inspired by history directly, but I still would like to implement some of the rules restricting magic from certain sourcebooks from AD&D 2E's Historical Reference line. Things like certain spells only working in consecrated areas, for instance, or other spells...

Somewhat tangential; a player in our current campaign (which is PF1) who also runs a 5E game lamented that 5E didn't have a dog/canine PC race. Apparently that idea isn't particularly popular.
