The Guards at the Gate Quote

Yeah, but I would use gate-guard type encounters sparingly, unless I was really, really sure that's what my group was into.

The Guards at the Gate Quote

Not sure what Wyatt's intention was, but I read that as "get to the fun encounters, combat or otherwise". A steady diet of combat encounters with nothing to break up the monotony is just as bad as an endless number of pointless gate-guard encounters. Ya gotta get some roleplaying in there, just...

    If Hasbro Pulls the Plug....

400 or 800 pounds, as the market leader, Paizo would definitely become the target of internet trolls worldwide. It's just the nature of the beast, you could say. ;)

    If Hasbro Pulls the Plug....

I only skimmed this thread, so not sure if this has been mentioned already. If Hasbro pulls the plug then Paizo will become the new 800-pound gorilla, and soon the honeymoon they're currently enjoying will be over. Once they release a new edition, the flaming will start, because if you make...

Legends and Lore - Nod To Realism

I can change my underwear on a whim, and I think that's pretty important. More notably, my friends and co-workers insist that it is vital that I do so. ;)

    RPGs and "Bodily Functions"

One memorable exchange went thusly: GM: You open the door to find a small bathroom. Me: I take a dump. GM: There's no paper.

#1 (conclusion in #2), "Search for the Forbidden Chamber" by Jake Jaquet. :D

Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder Online MMORPG Announced

Yeah, too bad about the rules, but on the other hand the skill-based system does sound interesting. I just hope they release a polished, basically complete game. There are lots of MMOs out there for people to play, so you can no longer shove a game out the door before it's ready, with promises...

If WotC Released D&D 3.75 Tomorrow....

3.75 - might have a look, actually playing it would be a long shot 3e lite - would be very interested in trying it

I don't get the dislike of healing surges

I'm not going so far as to say he's lying, but there's gotta be something he's forgetting or neglecting to tell us. It just doesn't fly. Now, even if everything's on the up-and-up, then he should realize his experience is far from common in 3e. Maybe his party is full of skilled optimizers with...

Dannyalcatraz, I'm still not buying it. Sorry.

I don't get the dislike of healing surges

Hussar, I'd xp you if I could, but let me just add that I'm having a hard time with those assertions too. Something had to give; in most campaigns that kind of behavior would result in a lot of dead PCs.

    Are Animals in D&D Too " Eurocentric " ?

The real world is a gold mine of unusual flora and fauna that can really spice up your setting. There was a documentary on Madagascar on the BBC, IIRC, narrated by David Attenborough, that showed some really cool plants and animals that would fit in nearly any fantasy world. I've always felt the...

    Take the Narrative Wounding Challenge.

I've not kept up with this whole thread, but regarding major battle wounds, maybe just don't narrate entrails spilling out or limbs coming off if the PC has healing surges left? When healing surges are used up, then you know the character is vulnerable to more serious wounds. Am I missing...

    WoW Imitates 4e?

That's not what I'd use a pile of dirty magazines for. *cough*

    WoW Imitates 4e?

Hmm, picking abilities at prescribed intervals is pretty generic, but the Monk healing via damage definitely sounds inspired by 4e.

9 essential geek books you must read right now.

I think they're saying the 1e DMG transcends the game for which it was written and is entertainment even for those who've never played D&D. And if so, they're right.

9 essential geek books you must read right now.

Hear, hear! Most people think of those campy movies when they think of Conan, but the stories were way better--and his Solomon Kane and El Borak tales should also be required reading for any RPG'er. Lovecraft too.

You lucky dog. I've always dreamed of scoring 7 of 9. ;)
