Would you play D&D if the sacred cows were sacrificed?

Not that I agree that D&D does real sword and sorcery well, but to be fair, the start of the first book may be the beginning of the story, but it is by no means the beginning of Elric's career. He is already mid to high level (in D&D terms) when the story begins.

Would you play D&D if the sacred cows were sacrificed?

If, as you say, the game plays very well without the sacred cows, sure I'd play it. That's really my biggest deciding factor (for the record I don't think D&D in its current incarnation plays well, but that's just my opinion and a discussion for another thread). And the fact that it had the...

    AGoT - House Steadfast

Whatever time period and type of game we decide on, I'd like to keep it at least somewhat like a traditional game (Band of Heroes style). I don't mind throwing in the political stuff (Game of Thrones style), but it's not really the type of gaming I'm used to and if that was the sole focus I'd...

    AGoT - House Steadfast

I shelled out a lot of money for that book last Christmas and haven't gotten to use it yet, so I might be up for it. Can you tell a little more about the game you're wanting to run?

    Lord of the Rings RPG

It is sooooo much like D20 it is not funny. It is basically D20 but using 2D6 instead. You roll 2D6, add modifiers (often many fiddly modifiers like D&D) and try to beat a target number. It has a long skill list like D&D, basically the same six ability scores (with different names), it has...

    What Sterotypes do you hate?

"The Good Girl" with Jennifer Aniston is the worst example of this that I've seen. It was the most ridiculous caricature of "country folks" I have ever seen, and she was particularly bad trying to pull it off. And it was so well received too. Grrr I had an Asian friend I used to kid about...

    Why Sourcebooks?

Just off the top of my head I would say that what you are trying to simulate in an RPG is much more complicated than in a traditional family board game. There is just too much to be explained on the inside of a box cover. And the more people play the game, the more situations arise that...

Good generic descriptions of castle rooms?

Try these from Tabletop Adventures: http://www.rpgnow.com/product_info.php?products_id=4188&SRC=EnWorld http://www.rpgnow.com/product_info.php?products_id=6730& They also have similar products for wilderness and city areas: http://www.rpgnow.com/default.php?manufacturers_id=612 I can't...

    What Sterotypes do you hate?

Not really a stereotype, more of a convention, but when the bad guy, who has burned villages, killed women and children, and wears boots made from endangered animals, is beaten and the good guys finally have him at gunpoint at their mercy, they don't kill him because that would be stooping to...

    D&D and RPG Play

I prefer lighter games like D6 and Castles and Crusades, but I keep D&D around because I'm more likely to find people to play with. Of course, I haven't been in a real face-to-face group in a couple of years, so I'm not playing much of anything these days.

Oblivion Mods: NPC Level & Equipment Lists?

In standard Oblivion, NPC enemies (and the equipment they carry) level up with you. I've seen several mods that change this so that even at higher levels bandits still wear fur and leather and carry iron weapons, and so that you might still meet low-level enemies at high levels (after all, imps...

Alternate D20 Magic Systems - Your Experiences

Sovereign Stone: Spellcasters have a Spellcasting bonus (forget what it's called exactly) similar to BAB. To cast a spell, roll D20+Spellcasting Bonus. Spells have a Casting Cost, sort of like a Difficulty Number. You have to roll higher than the casting cost, but you can do it over several...

    Explaining the Game

I suck at explaining anything, and even I got my girlfriend to understand with the good ol' movie/novel comparison: "It's like being a main character in a movie or a novel. You've got one person who runs the game who makes up the story, and everyone else plays a character in the story. The...

    Single Best Sci-Fi Television Moment . . . EVAR!?

Second this one. Also, the last scene of "The Gift", the look on Dawn's face when she realizes what Buffy is about to do. ST:TNG "Yesterday's Enterprise", the scene where Picard is talking to Riker and Castillo after Capt. Garrett was killed. Castillo is arguing for permission to take the...

    looking for a new system

The D6 system from West End Games fits all your requirements. 1,2,4,7: It is very easy to learn, you can pick up enough of the system to play AND create a character in about 15 minutes (and that's with a smoke break :) ). I could explain the system in a paragraph not much longer than your...

    Review of Space Seed

It's not entirely a goof. It can be explained a way. Since we don't know exactly when Chekov was first assigned to the Enterprise, it's possible he was there and just wasn't part of the main cast/bridge crew. If Khan and Co. took over the ship, the whole crew would probably know about it...

Help me with my research paper: Survey #3

As others have said, I don't bring it up, but if someone asks I don't deny it. I may lump RPGs in with other games under a general "Gaming" category. After all, I like a lot of other kinds of games too.

They'd revoke my D&D gamer license if they knew....

I hate Beholders, Mind Flayers (and the fact that they are called "Mind Flayers"), and Plane-hopping.
