    "Epic" progression after 6th level

I see class balance as being more of a non-issue. People not choosing classes doesn't really seem to be that big of a deal in actual play-- if no one plays a class the point of "Doesn't this class suck?" never gets brought up. (I mean, yeah it sucks, but npcs can still take it.) Classes...

    Freedom of Movement Definitive Answer

The other part of this is the 9th level spell Freedom. If Freedom of Movement works on pretty much anything, why have a spell five levels higher that does pretty much the same thing? To be fair, Freedom lists things like Maze that aren't on the FoM list, but it seems odd for a spell to be five...

Tiny/Large Races: Potential to Standardize or Permanently Marginalized?

Arcana Evolved has giants and faen. Giants start off Medium and Faen start off Small, but after 3 racial levels Giants become Large. Faen can become Sprytes after character level 3rd, in which they become Tiny and get wings. Both are technically LA +0, but giants have to take the racial...

Your top ten most useful items

There are always a few things that end up on my equipment list with just about any character I play: 1) Three large sacks. One of my earliest D&D games had the group find the Big Room O' Treasure, a Scrooge McDuck sized hoard. What we realized is that with all our 10' poles and 50' of ropes...

Unlock the game inside D&D! (Free RPG Day)

I won't be attending since the 1000 mile commute is a little much (also, I'm pretty sure you're just making these names up. Runnymede Station above the Bloor line?) But I'm wondering, what separates a Ry20 one shot from any other 6th level or below D&D game?

    Damage Reduction Stacking

Well, if the feat gives you DR 1 that doesn't stack with existing DR, but requires existing DR if you want the feat... then that feat wouldn't actually do anything.

    Damage Reduction Stacking

Odds are if there is a feat that gives you DR 1/-- and lists DR as a prereq, its stacks with the prereq DR. I'll go out on a limb and say that. As for say, the Barb's DR and the DR from Adamantine armor, I've never had a problem letting them stack. I don't remember if that's by the RAW or...

Can an Illusion of Cats Damage a Rat Swarm?

Reverse-nerfing is only legal in Arkansas. To me, tailoring an image to have a specific effect on a target is exactly what illusions are designed for. Making an illusion of something an animal is naturally frightened of is a much more creative use of the spell than creating an image the animal...

    Essential Healing

A friend of mine was running a short, one-shot scenario where we pretty much knew the party was going to be killed. A suicide run. I was playing a 10th level healer, another player was playing a 10th level tank. The way we ended up surviving was I hid in the corner (I may have been invisible...

    Illusionary Cone of Cold

It would be kind of funny if an illusionist kept firing fake Cone of Cold spells at a rogue who thought the reason he wasn't taking damage was his Evasion. No real game effect to it, but it'd be funny. To me.

Do you plan out your character's advancement in advance?

Yeah, most of the time. I don't usually plot out the full progression, but I have an idea where I'm headed over the next few levels at least. My current character I plotted out 1-20 because he had a lot of fighter levels and the build was feat-intensive, so once I built him to 14 it was fairly...

Monte Cook on target audience of RPG Supplements

Well, in fairness to me, this has been a running joke of mine since the early 90's. It was my goto explanation for wonky rules or meaningless changes to a system (like the supplement bloat in many systems that try to rewrite the rules with every new book). My logic behind it was if I worked...

Monte Cook on target audience of RPG Supplements

I've actually been saying for years that game designers don't play the games. If we didn't already have like 8 First Rules of Gaming, it'd be my first rule of gaming. It also reminds me of the parable of the free refrigerator, but I'm too tired to go into it now.

Can an Illusion of Cats Damage a Rat Swarm?

Well, the illusions we're talking about are figments, so as soon as the swarm touches them it'll know they're not real. But for me, the benefit comes from the caster making an illusion of a predator to scare the rat swarm, rather than just putting another valid target on the field.

    Firearms

I go with Martial. Although my stats might go more like: Pistol, 2d6, 19-20/x3 10' Range, 5 Standard Actions to Reload, Cost: 200gp Musket, 3d6, 19-20 30' Range, 10 Standard Actions to Reload, Cost: 400gp Possibly with a Misfire on a 1. Fairly primitive firearms designed to be fired off at...

    Making Player Rolls

My GM uses open rolls, so it really doesn't matter who's rolling the dice. As a GM, I'd rather let the pcs make the rolls anyway. As long as you can trust your players not to metagame I don't see the problem.

Too much character makes TS ARGHHH!!!

Well, it just seems like if Globes of Invulnerability were that easy to get through, they'd really have to call them something else.

Wizard: Essential Class or Scared Cow

I'll throw another vote in for AE. Its a very versatile magic system that doesn't get into the arcane/divine terminology. On the whole the spells are a little less powerful than their D&D counterparts, but casters have a lot more freedom in how they cast them. Its definitely worth a look.

    "Epic" progression after 6th level

Arcana Evolved has a catch-all metamagic feat called Modify Spell. All casters in that system are spotaneous casters, and Modify lets them increase either the range, the duration, the AoE, remove either the somatic or verbal components, or increase the damage by x1.5 at the cost of two slots...

Piratecat - essential to ENWorld, or sacred cow?

Personally, I thought the paladin minotaur sacred cow post was hilarious. But it came and went so fast.
