What does a paladin do (or should be doing)?

None of my answers have been what you just listed so here they are again: A Paladin is immune to fear. I don't want my Paladin to go screaming down a hall with arms flailing and crying for his Mommy. A Paladin is a marshal character. He can use better than basic weapons and go toe to toe in...

What does a paladin do (or should be doing)?

Why do I get the feeling you are only in this for argument's sake? I and others here have already explained what a Paladin should be able to do. You are either disregarding those posts or you do not comprehend them. Are you a Blackguard of Paladin Banishment? :) How about this: You have...

What does a paladin do (or should be doing)?

I never said that the fear thing was my sole definition of a Paladin. Do not use shady debate tactics with me. I am trying to have a real conversation here. A Halfling Fighter with heavy armor and a shield could very well be a Paladin if they build the theme/feats to match what a Paladin is...

What does a paladin do (or should be doing)?

The Cleric of Moradin does sorta feel like a Paladin... because he isn't following the rules (that we can see). Why does he use a d10 for damage and where does he get +4 to that damage? He wouldn't be such a bad-ass if he were only damaging at d8+2 Then there is the question about martial...

What does a paladin do (or should be doing)?

Abstruse, thanks for recommending Dresden Files. That's what this thread is about: exploring what a Paladin does or should be doing. This thread (along with the other one) I think are good for the game. They expose the forum members to a wide range of ideas about how something may be done...

What does a paladin do (or should be doing)?

You can call it fluff if you want, but the whole LG and Chivalry thing was a real mechanic in the game. It was the price you paid for being a bad-ass. I agree that a lot of people played them as Lawful Stupid. But the DM should have stopped that real quick before it got out of hand. When I...

What does a paladin do (or should be doing)?

I would argue that the Cleric cannot do what Roland did. The Cleric cannot (should not) wade into melee and bring the smackdown on swarms of minions. He needs his spells to back that up. I envision the Paladin to be overpowered, but tempered with the heavy burden of Lawful Good and the Laws...

Reasons to have paladins and rangers as classes

I am not sure where I stand on the issue, but I wanted to correct something here. The paladin is not a D&D-ism. It is a holy knight going all the way back to the old stories of Charlemagne. Roland is an icon as far as I am concerned. If Aragorn gets a class, so should Roland.
