    Vow of poverty question

I think what you're describing here is a fundamental problem in 3.x and 4E: the assumption of magic items and their bonuses in the power-by-level curve. VoP is static and predictable, but everyone else is wildly unpredictable in relation, depending on how the DM chooses to allot magic loot. Even...

    Vow of poverty question

What finally killed VoP for me was a game where I got his by something; can't remember what, but every other person in the party had a relatively cheap wondrous item that protected them from the effect. I didn't, and I failed a save-or-die/suck. It's amazing how much utility you give up by...

    Vow of poverty question

My take is that I compare it mechanically against the rest of the party; roleplay aside, if you have a DM that observes wealth-by-level guidelines, you are shafting yourself with VoP, even if you're a druid or monk. In a magic-lite game, maybe it shines; that's not my cuppa so I wouldn't know.

    [LPF] Return to Boar's Ridge

Darvus Andar, Paladin of Helerion "Well, it actually seems most of us wish to attempt sneaking by to the south. If so, I am with you. And I will pray to whatever gods hold sway over chance to smile on me this day," Darvus says with a weak chuckle. "Besides, maybe the guards will not be paying...

D&D 5E (2014) Does the inclusion of these two gamers undo WOTC desire to be inclusive?

Eh, all my favorite movies and books are made in part by people I detest, so I guess I got over this a long, long time ago. Upside? I get to enjoy a lot more things without first asking myself if I have to obligatorily hate it.

D&D 5E (2014) Does the inclusion of these two gamers undo WOTC desire to be inclusive?

This is article is unsubstantiated slander, which pretty much makes this a witch hunt. Let's just weigh them against a duck and move on.

D&D 5E (2014) I can haz WILD MAGE and the first DRAGONBORN art?

No! Stay! Wild mage friend to gelfling! MMmmmmmmm!

Why use D&D for a Simulationist style Game?

The problem with sim games in general is that compounding imprecisions in the details yield enormous inaccuracy on the whole. A properly abstract system is imprecise, but accurate. Like a cone of uncertainty.

    D&D 5E (2014) Chaladin

We'll have to see how it plays out. It could also turn out that, due to bounded accuracy, getting a +3 instead of a +2 on your main attack is a definite advantage. When you're throwing +40's and +35's like in 4E, maybe not so much. I don't know; just throwing stuff out there.

    [LPF] Return to Boar's Ridge

Darvus Andar, Paladin of Helerion Darvus looks down at his diagram. "The way south is longer, but harder to see. The direct route, we will almost immediately come under withering fire. However, for all of the southern route's ease of access, I fear that my armor will give us away anyway, and...

    D&D 5E (2014) Chaladin

I would say no on the basis that, at least for his combat role, Strength will still be the obvious, always optimal choice, so the Chaladin in 5E will have some serious MAD going on. Roll them stats and hope for cream-filled cookies!

    D&D 5E (2014) Speculating about the future of the D&D industry/community in a post-5E world

Err... it had all the technical sophistication of web animations people put out all the time for funsies. I doubt they spent a significant amount on it.

    D&D 5E (2014) Speculating about the future of the D&D industry/community in a post-5E world

There are a number of things companies do when in a competitive fight for market share, and WotC isn't doing them. First and foremost, non-competes on your employees. So no, I do not believe for a second there is a great Paizo vs WotC struggle, except the one we imagine (or desperately want to...

    D&D 5E (2014) Speculating about the future of the D&D industry/community in a post-5E world

Or, maybe, it says they aren't interested in doing so? The PF vs. D&D football game exists only at our tables and message boards; Paizo and WotC aren't playing it.

    D&D 5E (2014) Chaladin

If paladin smite does not add Cha bonus to attack rolls, that would be a a radical departure from its history.

    D&D 5E (2014) Chaladin

The CON attacks I will absolutely give you. I never took them, and didn't know they existed. But can you agree that there exists ways of thinking about the paladin that allow for Cha-based attacks? EDIT: Even for 'locks... Con attacks were just weird. Seemed a little contrived. Not my favorite...

    D&D 5E (2014) Chaladin

But the conceit behind the 4E paladin, and the historical smite mechanic, is that they aren't non-magical attacks.

    D&D 5E (2014) Chaladin

Just because some guys on a forum don't like it doesn't mean you won't have it as an option. Myself, I like a balance between Str and Cha as far as stat importance goes; a robust smite mechanic (which PF has and 3.5 did NOT) gives me the best of both worlds. I also kinda pride myself on playing...

    [LPF] Return to Boar's Ridge

Darvus Andar, Paladin of Helerion Darvus wakes and dons his armor. After hastily consuming some trail rations, he draws a rough diagram in the dirt of the approaches to the enemy camp. "So, the first question is this: the road, or the open southern approach?" Darvus grimaces sheepishly and...

    D&D 5E (2014) Player's Handbook Alpha *Spoilers*

I got friends who are cheap and unethical, so they will likely be a lost sale now that the alpha is out. I'm not even going to look at it because it's (1) wrong and (2) of indeterminate accuracy.
