    D&D 5E (2014) Advice for a newish 5E gamemaster

I would posit that this should be your next investment, then: http://www.amazon.com/Chessex-001LBCHX-Pound-O-Dice/dp/B008C0KXYS/

Count me in for ES@1, as well; the only way to play(tm).

D&D 5E (2014) New Players same level as Current Players?

One would have to assume, first, that the party works as a team. If you have that, then the level 1 fighter has access to defensive and offensive buffs and synergistic actions and feats from his or her party members. I had a level 1 rogue join a party at 8th level. Not only did the rogue...

The EN World Best Sellers List 4Q2015

The problem for WotC (née TSR) adventures, historically, is that to find a gem you have to slog through a lot of crap. The current model lets others bear the burden of getting the quality right every time, while reaping the benefit of having the best adventures available. Very savvy model, IMHO.

    Character Suicide

I am puzzled at some of the responses here. Isn't a DM responsible for setting the tone of the campaign? I mean, being a gatekeeper for non-core content is absolutely, 100% within the purview of the DM; more so when said content is homebrewed by the player requesting it! The OP has been clear...

D&D 5E (2014) Do you want your DM to fudge?

FWIW, Hussar, when I beef up an encounter, that's when I'm least likely to fudge. If a PC is going to die, I would rather the player have an epic story to go with it. BUT I also telegraph to the players that they are in a slightly-higher-than-appropriate encounter. In those cases I will even...

    D&D 5E (2014) Shapeshifting dragons - only metallic?

Because they are covetous in the extreme, and the idea that such minuscule, inconsequential creatures as humanoids can enjoy pleasures they do not is inexcusable to them.

    D&D 5E (2014) Have you bought any (non DM's Guild] 3rd party 5E products?

They deliberately delayed release until after the MM was released so they could fine-tune balance. The wonderful thing about the book is that it's inconsistency in attacks and powers and adds a refreshing style change from the core rules. Last session, I threw a Red Jester at my party. His...

D&D 5E (2014) Deal Breakers - Or woah, that is just too much

The spousal unit is always healed/buffed/rescued first. At least IMHXP. Well, except my wife. She's all like, "Oh, you fell down? Maybe if you weren't so useless, you'd still have hitpoints. /RAAAAWWWR I charge!"

Speak for yourself. I personally hate the stuff. Can't stand it. Can't even stand the silly fricative at the beginning of the word. Ffffffffun. Blech.

    D&D 5E (2014) Have you bought any (non DM's Guild] 3rd party 5E products?

Fifth Edition Foes was worth more than the Kickstarter price I paid for it. I use it often enough that I really need to get the PDF printed and bound...

D&D 5E (2014) Last Hurrah mini-campaign: Looking for brilliant ideas for an adventure to end all adventures

Tell them to take their favorite characters of all time, living or dead, and stat them out in the system of your choice. The gods are failing and falling. Chaos reigns throughout the multiple material planes. Someone needs to step up and rescue the multiverse. At the epic conclusion, the worlds...

D&D 5E (2014) Do you want your DM to fudge?

One time ten to twelve years ago, I pulled Tucker's Kobolds on my players. They were level 8, the kobolds were CR 1/4 or 1/8 or whatever they were in the MM. Everything was by the rules: trap DC's, etc. Everything was in line with (or even below) acceptable parameters for the party's level. I...

D&D 5E (2014) Do you want your DM to fudge?

What are you going to do? Audit the DM's notes and monster stats? You're on the other side of the screen, and you have no idea what's going on on the DM's side. That's why the DM is the dungeon master, and you only pick someone you trust to run a good game, and whose rulings you're willing to...

D&D 5E (2014) Do you want your DM to fudge?

Whether my DM does, or doesn't, I'll never know. If he fudges, he's really good at not letting it show. He runs a good game so I trust him. I therefore neither ask him to fudge, or not fudge. As long as I know there's risk: in one campaign he killed my PC four times. EDIT: I think we need to...

D&D 5E (2014) Deal Breakers - Or woah, that is just too much

There is only one solution to the problem. If you come up with a intelligent solution I hadn't thought of, I will come up with fiat reason why it won't work. It might not even make sense, but whatever; you need to solve the problem the way I intended. Also, when you are done with that, you are...

D&D 5E (2014) Teleportation circles costs *how* much?!

In a world where wizards can do such things, jewelers and bankers would hold gems and coin in escrow before purchase, to see if the magic wears off. The wealthier ones will keep a level 1 mage or level 0 adept on retainer to cast detect magic on them. But, at my table, you can't lie to magic...

D&D 5E (2014) Teleportation circles costs *how* much?!

It depends on whether undead are considered "alive" for the purposes of estate law. After all, there's still a "death tax."

D&D 5E (2014) New Players same level as Current Players?

The xp tables in 5e give a 1st level character the best chance to catch up since 1e (there is another thread I saw with a chart comparison). Starting at 1st level is something I would never have done in 3.x or 4E, but is something I'm considering for 5th. All of this is with the caveat that for...
