    Gender in Mechanics

I think he means by implication, since there is no rules-based reason for them not to be. Thus, 'by the rules', with no mention of social issues, etc. Anyway, I think the reason there's no gender dimorphism in the rules is that a) the rules are not fine-grained enough to support it whne...

What's the point of the Eldritch Knight PrC?

The spellsword in my Freeport game is doing exactly that, although I believe he is taking Diplomacy as his Skill Adaptability skill, now that he's inherited a noble title. J

    The Return of the Grell?

I got into AD&D through the Fiend Folio (the first one). In it, the grell were just weird floating brains with tentacles and a beak. Never heard of this caste system. J

What's the point of the Eldritch Knight PrC?

DMG 197, the section on designing prestige classes, tells about what PrCs are. "Ideally, a prestige class you design yourself is tied to an organization or culture in the campaign world...There are other roles a prestige class can fill. A prestige class can play off of a race's strengths...or...

Rules of the Game: Making Magic Items

Interesting fact: according to that article, a scroll of fireball at caster level 5 would cost 375 gp. A wand of fireball at CL5 with a single charge remaining would cost 225 gp. In fact, you could get a single-charge fireball wand with CL8 for only 360 gp. If you wanted to get into more...

    Terry Pratchett

Really? I always thought that Carrot got 'underused' because Pterry realized that Vimes was so much more interesting as a character. J

DMs, Do You Pander To Player Skills?

I absolutely do my best to make sure that a player's choices - of skill, class, and background - become important. Otherwise the player has wasted skill points, time, and effort. I hate it when players make me waste time and effort, so I show them the same courtesy. It's the same theory as...

    reforging weapons

I think reforging a blade would qualify as destroying it, so any magic would be lost. An artificer from Eberron has (I believe) the ability to destroy a magic item and reuse some of the XP in it. That might be your best bet. Alternately, find someone who has a +5 bastard sword and a whole...

I'm ready for Fourth Edition now (a brief manifesto)

Except that earlier editions were even worse for doing what the original poster wanted... J

    Chronicles of Riddick future setting

The same is true of most action movies. The question is, are the things he does superhuman by the movie world's standards? The answer, I think, is no - we see Jack/Kyra doing some pretty crazy wirework fighting as well, for example. So Riddick doesn't need to be superhuman - he's just...

What's the point of the Eldritch Knight PrC?

Interesting no, useful yes - it's just like the Mystic Theurge but for Fighter/Wizards. It provides a starting point for designing more flavorful fighting casters, and it could be used to spackle in the gaps when playing a more flavorful fighter/caster such as a Spellsword. J

You knew this was coming. Who will die in the next Harry Potter book

It's more properly 'shippers, short for "relationshippers". I think the term got started with Mulder/Scully X-Files fans. J

    Epic Experiences and Thoughts

I think you guys forgot about 'take 10' - with that you can easily get your 15 DC at even first level, and possibly even DC 20 (4 ranks, +3 skill focus, +1 stat, +2 masterwork tools). It really all depends on where you set your benchmarks. For instance, the feats you ascribe to the legions -...

    Ideal Published Adventure Campaign

Freeport! The original trilogy, then another adventure (why not try something from Tales of Freeport?), then back to Freeport for Black Sails. Sorry, had to. ;)

    Anachronisms in Fantasy

I keep responding to rounser, which I realize now is the wrong thing to do, because he's not really interested in the topic of his thread. Let us just note that the original poster's idea, Eberron, and a great many other settings from Arcanum to Discworld do not have the 'Rounser Seal of...

[Bad Axe Games] Wulf — Heroes of High Favor Anthology?

Only if I'm the totality of your target market. If I am, I'm flattered. And a bit worried because it's probably not a viable business plan. J

Conjurer feats, where to find them

There's no AU SRD, but you can get the PDFs for cheaper than the print books. The CBoEM isn't AU, though, it's 3.5 (it just has an appendix with conversions). J

Yeah, and what's with that Gandalf guy using a sword?

    Anachronisms in Fantasy

Yeah, it is. You're saying that everyone who enjoys Eberron is guilty of "destroying the mythic resonance" of D&D. Add it to the fact that you've basically hijacked a thread where someone wanted anachronisms in his game, and you're basically telling him "you're playing the game wrong". So, if...

[Bad Axe Games] Wulf — Heroes of High Favor Anthology?

Gnomes...gnomes are problematic. If the book plays up the 'tinker gnome' thing that's infested D&D since Dragonlance, I'm going to avoid it like the plague - but I have more faith in Bad Axe than that. If it harkens back to the good old 1e gnomes, a race a little more mystical than dwarves...
