    RPGNow and the competition . . .

I wasn't speaking of opportunity, but desire. I go looking for (say) a d20 supplement about sailing. I don't go looking for 'a supplement by a semi-pro author'. In fact, if there was a pro/semipro/amateur division, it might unfairly influence people against checking in categories other than...

    RPGNow and the competition . . .

...I still don't get it. I've never looked at an offering on RPGnow and said "Well, I'd buy that if I knew it was done by 'a professional', or 'a semipro', or 'an amateur'". And frankly, I'm not going to cut any slack to people in any of those designations, because it really comes down to what...

How many game books on your shelf have you never used?

Hmm. Going through my shelf, I can't recall having used anything from the Book of Exalted Deeds or the Dragonomicon (although the latter might be a 'yet', and a feat from the BoED may have crept in at one point) The AEG stuff has been a mixed bag - I think the one that's seen the most use...

    RPGNow and the competition . . .

All else being equal? When is that ever going to happen in the real world? Never, because the only way everything could be equal is if the books were exactly the same, and that's a lawsuit waiting to happen. One of those books is likely to be cheaper. One is likely to be better produced. One...

Oh, phew! I just sent an email about this, glad to hear you're already on the case. Thanks, Jim!

Higher Level Feats for the Fighting Man

One of the perennial complaints that players of higher-level characters have is what to do with the fighter. Like the wizard, it is frequently abandoned for the shiny attractions of various prestige classes, but unlike the wizard (who all too frequently loses little or nothing from his choice)...

    RPGNow and the competition . . .

Really, (and meaning no disrespect to Phil, who's done great stuff), what is the difference? Phil's just this guy who decided to write d20 PDFs, the same as everyone else on there. Is it the production quality of his work? I just bought a PDF from him that had absolutely no artwork, so that...

    RPGNow and the competition . . .

I think that most people who copy software (or PDFs, or similar things - like mp3s) are perfectly aware that it's illegal, and rationalize it in some way - "I can't afford it" or "I can't get it any other way" or "Information wants to be free" or even "Who cares? I'll never get caught anyway". J

    Poems that make you shiver

Since my big faves have been mentioned (Ozymandias, Ulysses and The Highwayman) I'll add some genre stuff here instead: "Beyond the River of the Blessed, there we sat down, yea, we wept, when we remembered Avalon. Our swords were shattered in our hands and we hung our shields on the oak...

    [Eberron] new shifter traits

WOTC had an outsider wings feat in Races of Faerun, which required one other feat (and a base save) as the prerequisites. Edit: and if you gave up having usable arms during flight, it would take a lot of the power out - you wouldn't be able to play helicopter gunship with bow or spells. J

[Ronin Arts] Planar Factions now available! (Updated)

Ah, early mornings. I read this and my first thought was, 'I wonder if he liked it as much as I did?' J

Cure & Inflict - two different schools?

Not necessarily. Planar Ally is Conjuration. Banishment is Abjuration. Both involve sending a target on an involuntary planar trip. J

    Warforged vs. Ironborn

Interesting. I would have thought that 'immune to fatigue' would cover subdual damage inflicted by fatigue, much as immunity to fire/cold would cover the subdual damage inflicted by extremes of temperature. Otherwise, you have your fire giants constantly passing out in their volcano lairs...

    Warforged vs. Ironborn

SKR said this, too, but I don't get it. As a certain Mr. Bonaparte once said, "An army travels on its stomach" Trail rations Drinkable water (or beer, or whatever) Pack mules to carry it Feed for the mules Teamsters for the mule train Guards for the mule train Pay for the soldiers...

8 - The Steadfast Order of the Shapers of Earthly Splendor

The Steadfast Order of the Shapers of Earthly Splendor provides an excellent and inspiring writeup of a secret society based strongly on Freemasonry. Despite the series title, this faction is not closely tied to the planes, and could easily be dropped into any setting that needs a Mason-like...

How does a player go about starting a Wizard's Guild?

To have a true "guild" in the original sense, you need to have the cooperation of the other area magic-users. It would be an association for mutual benefit and regulation of trade - setting standards and the like. (Casting a spell of the first circle costs this much) You'd want to have either...

3e and the Test of Time

What I think will (or won't) stand the test of time: Most of the WOTC 'crunch' won't - but that's OK. The're producing the core books, and they'll produce the next set. The setting books will remain useful. I happily ran some Planescape in 3e and see no reason not to do the same for...

Troubleshooting Whispers of the Vampire's Blade (Player's keep out!)

The soulblade can act against the vampire if it wants - but what does it want? Is one of the PCs (the warforged?) better suited to the soulblade's plans than the vampire is? It might try to engineer being transferred to that person. Other questions: is there a way for the PCs to...

    Am I a cruel DM?

Here are my questions, and a bit of backseat DMing: Did the crated PCs have any chance to notice the betrayal? It would seem to me that they'd be able to notice the other crates being loaded, people walking around the warehouse, etc - and when they weren't loaded it should have been obvious...
