The Devil's in the Details: Slavicsek reveals the Pit Fiend in all its glory

Start at Strength and from there on move down. Read it like that and you get Str, Con, Dex, Int, Wis, Cha.

The Devil's in the Details: Slavicsek reveals the Pit Fiend in all its glory

His damage is 1d12+11 with the mace. Looks like my beloved dodecahedrons are still in. So this is the best 4e preview ever. :D

Excerpts from Worlds and Monsters at Wizards

They've also been a pain to use. First you must learn the generic dragon rules (all their attack types, frightful presence, default immunities, etc.). Then you had to determine the unique spells, skills, and feats the individual dragon has. By this point you've probably you've probably spent...

D&D 4E How should 4E deal with the power of fire?

My hope too. Similar to how the Orb spells and psionics work in 3e. Cold to slow, lightning to daze, acid to have a lingering effect a la Melf's, sonic to deafen (weak but resistances are less common), and fire to just plain brutalize. Or something like that.

Things that are Easy to change vs. things that are Hard to change

Other than stunting (which should happen pretty much all the time) and sleeping (which should happen about once per day). Limit Breaks aren't really all that great in this respect. A more subtle difficulty here is that virtue flaws and limit points are built in as some sort of balancing mechanic...

    D&D 4E First Impressions of 4E / Predictions on 5E

Hmm quite right. I stand corrected. See, nothing scary with admitting you're wrong. ;)

    D&D 4E First Impressions of 4E / Predictions on 5E

Oh come on now. Skills, feats, talents, race, alignment, spells, and good old fashioned roleplaying. There is so much out there to distuingishc characters. You're now arguing that characters are identical simply because their untrained skils be equally high, assuming equal ability scores and...

    D&D 4E First Impressions of 4E / Predictions on 5E

I think it's far, far too early to make calls like that. Correct so far... ... but now you're wrong. I already said it earlier: ability modifiers and race. On top of that the automatic skill levels are quite low. A 10th level fighter has +5 in Ride. Whoop-de-doo, that's the same as a 2nd...

    D&D 4E First Impressions of 4E / Predictions on 5E

Shifting goalposts. You started with "without any artificial barriers because of rules" and are now at "the artificial barriest because of rules are different and I don't like the new ones". I'm not going to have a conversation with you if you keep altering your opinion to be contrary...

    D&D 4E First Impressions of 4E / Predictions on 5E

But your impressions are wrong. As I have shown (and now cwhs01 too), pre-4e isn't "without any artificial barriers because of rules". 4e is not becoming something that D&D never was in this respect. We back this up with facts and show it to you. You're either not looking at those fact or your...

    D&D 4E 4E Magic Items...

For the record, the Ogre-Mage-With-A-Portable-Hole was just me agreeing with OakwoodDM. There's no way those items are real combat powerhouses. I came up with a contrived situation that showed otherwise as satire. Hence I said: "this very plausible and archetypical D&D encounter was killed...

    D&D 4E First Impressions of 4E / Predictions on 5E

The rings working only for a certain level is the same as certain feats that can only be taken by people with a certain prerequisite. Or spells that can only be cast by people of a certain level. Or Cloudkill being unable to kill a creature outright that has more than a certain amount of hitdice...

    D&D 4E 4E Magic Items...

Ok, well... there's this Ogre Mage, right? And they can fly and become invisible, and this one's hovering above a lake. And he just happens to have a portable hole strapped to his chest as a clever defense against arrows. So. The fighter spots him with his helm's special sight, walks over the...

    D&D 4E First Impressions of 4E / Predictions on 5E

D&D strives to be a computer game? Ok. Prove it. Show quotes from designers or the preview books that exlicitly state they want 4e to be a computer game (bonus points if it also states the reason they have chosen to keep it a PnP game instead). Next, please list the things you don't get in...

    D&D 4E First Impressions of 4E / Predictions on 5E

That's a bogus argument because 4e isn't a computer game. Personally I haven't seen anything that's blatantly stolen from WoW. D&D and RPGs in general have a very rich and varied history with more than enough material seeing a return in 4e rather than being something new. If anything WoW stole...

    D&D 4E Pimp my 4e

I'll run it as RAW at first, but unless 4e has something similar I'll import the stunt system of Iron Heroes after a little polishing and tweaking. For the uninitiated: the stunt system of IH - a D&D variant - allows people to grant themselves bonuses by making checks of some sort. It's...

    D&D 4E Is there a spontaneous class in 4e?

Yeah that's exactly what WotC should do. They should take "spontaneous spellcaster" and turn it into "summoner". If you think the fanbase is pissed off now, you should see how they would react to that instead. I mean, nothing wrong with the summoner archetype. Sounds like fun, if a little hard...

Why I Intend to Purchase the 4th Edition Books

That is a very interesting phrase you have there. Definitely food for thought. But I must ask you the following: Please give a direct answer to the question you were asked (ie. "Useful? Useful outside of D&D? RPGs? Useful how?"), if you don't mind. You have alluded to this usefulness a while...

Undead, as monsters or as templates?

A mix. It hardly matters if a skeleton was taken from a human or an orc. It doesn't justify all the fiddly math a template requires. And since their locomotion comes from magic, I doubt if the inherent human/orc difference in strength is even justified in the skeletons. I can see the...
