Playing without a Controller - feasible?

I always used lots of minions when I had controllers. I tended not to use as many when the party didn't have a controller. You may have to build encounters slightly different, but the added damage from the 3rd striker will help solo encounters, even minus the debuffs.

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Next Blog - The Fighter

I've read every thread in this post, and I would just like to add to the chorus who can't believe they're going backwards again in design. IME people only ever took the first 4 levels of fighter (for the 3 feats) before switching to either the Barb, Ranger, or Rogue (or whatever other class...

    D&D 3.x 5E Eberron - should it be closer to 3.5E or 4E/

I liked most of the 4th Edition updates, but agree that Dragonmarks need to be more like they were in 3rd Edition. Honestly, it was mostly the same.

My players are in a wee bit of trouble...

Oh, I think my statement was slightly misunderstood. I agree with you, it's fun when things like that happen. I just meant my statement more along the lines that 5 brains (or however many are in your gaming group) will always be better than my brain, even if I think I have a bullet proof plan...

My players are in a wee bit of trouble...

The best laid plans of GMs are just speedbumps in the path of inventive PCs everywhere. Better luck nice time. ;)

    Please critique this house-rule

IMHO, that badly messes with the low levels of the game (and makes them much harder), but epic tier would be easier. If that is what you wish, than so be it.

Polearms Quiz - how'd you do?

Not a Polearm expert, so I was going off memory from Palladiums book of fantasy weapons. And I got 9, mostly screwing up the Glaive-Guisarme-Voule combinations.

    You Can't Take Short Rests

I've thought about this subject a bit, and one of the questions I have is what are you going to do about hit points, in-combat healing, and healing surges. For instance, say you have the first encounter in the dungeon and someone takes 30 points of damage and is healed once with a healing...

How many games will you run this year?

We game once a week, so 52 total games possible. We'll probably cancel around 10-15 of those a year due to various illnesses, commitments, or holidays, so somewhere between 31-40 games.

    DDI VT beta has re-opened

They sent an email with 5 passes to me today. I'll hop on sometime this week hopefully to see what I can see.

What Do You Do During Your Off-Season?

    Oh God, yes this.

    Conventions still worth it?

When I go to Cons, I make a point not to play anything I normally play, except for tourneys. So, stuff like Star Wars d6, Deadlands, Call of Cthulu, and Shadowrun tend to be high on my to do list.

    15 Minute Adventuring Day

The new MMIII math has made my players sit up and take notice, for sure. I tend to run huge set pieces, as oppossed to dungeons (though they do the dungeon thing on occasion), because my players like the non-combat aspect of RPGs as much, if not more, than the combat. What I found was...

    Strategies for Missing Players?

We have 5 players, and have been a stable gaming group (or at least core 4 people) for about 7-8 years now (yikes, hadn't realized it was that long). If one person misses, we game on. If two people miss, it's a gut call, but usually we'll either do a one shot, board game, or cards. If three...

    D&D 4E Craft and Performance for 4e

One of my players is a bard, when he attempts to perform/tell stories/etc I have him roll a Cha check against an level appropriate easy (sometimes normal for super important performances, but never hard) skill roll with his bard of all trades feat bonus. Diplomacy could also work for the roll...

    Personality Flair

#1) Has a severe case of Napolean syndrome. Likes to be in charge of everything, micromanages everyone, talks down to them. Fun fact: Got his position because his last boss was indicted on corruption, and he had a clean nose, but now that he's in power is even more corrupt than the previous...

If you could play in a campaign of your choice, what would it be?

Having always been the Marshall, I've never been a player in a Deadlands game (HoE or Weird West), and I love the original system so much that it would be my first choice. Anything in my signature would be awesome, however.

    You down with OCB?

Can you manage your character from the online CB during game like you could with the off-line CB, i.e. tracking healing surges, hps, daily powers usage, etc? I honestly haven't looked at the online CB since it first came out and it constantly crashed on me, despite being a subscriber because...

Dungeon #187 - first issue with 0 adventures?

Now that I'm finally looking at running Paragon tier adventures in the near future (level 10 now), I have come face to face with the fact levels 7-13 really lack significant adventures in Dragon. And really, just from reading the adventure list, it looks worse after that if you're not on the...
