Playing D&D: Homebrew or Published Setting? Why?

I don't always play in a published setting, but when I do, I play in Eberron. (Right now, we're playing in my 20 year old homebrewed setting, but next DnD game will take place back in Eberron, which is the group default setting of choice).

Critical Role Critical Role columnist needed for EN World

What time does the article need posting on Friday? Are we talking by 10 AM EST or by the end of the day?

    D&D 5E (2014) A single +1 armor for a level 10 party

I personally dislike the fact magic items are so rare in 5E. I feel like the attunement process helps keep magic items in check enough as it is presented in the rulebook. I also have played in a homebrew world where a Mage School controls the magic item creation market and has a shop in all of...

D&D 5E (2014) Lore Bard Magical Secret Picks

Bless and Counterspell are my two defaults. Revivify if you are the parties' sole healing.

    D&D 5E (2014) Survey Three Subclasses

I took the survey and my general responses are as follows: Circle of Spores Druid: It's a thematically tight subtheme that mostly does what it is intended to do. I'm not particularly interested in it as a PC, but I would use it for NPCs. The Brute: This feels just like the Champion fighter...

    D&D 5E (2014) No Magic Shops!

Yep, it is an interesting question/problem each DM faces. The Realms, which I enjoy the lore of immensely but do not play in, handles this with Realm Shaking Events every edition to explain away the differences (Time of Troubles, etc). That is perfectly viable. I personally just try to keep...

    D&D 5E (2014) No Magic Shops!

My magic shops are just fine, thanks for asking. In my home campaign, I had 20 years of a Wizard's School running all the magic shops, so I'm not going to let an edition change fundamentally change the dynamics of my world. You may not find exactly what you want at a magic shop (or really...

    D&D 5E (2014) Survivor Iconic D&D Monster- BEHOLDER WINS!

Beholder 26 - relevant to my party's interest at this moment. Displacer Beast 3- Of all the monsters are the list, this is the least interesting. Gelatinous Cube 18 Mimic 10 Mind Flayer/Illithid 19 Owlbear 11 Purple Worm 9 Rust Monster 9

Her background is in web design for those wondering. I'm mostly just excited that a woman is joining the DnD design team.

Behold My True Form: Creating Evolving Boss Monsters for 5th Edition

At level 8, my PCs can dish out hundreds of HPs per round without breaking a sweat. Any Solo that doesn't have at least 300 hps will last less than two rounds.

D&D 5E (2014) Do things cleaned by Prestidigitation stay clean after the duration is over?

In order: Yes. No. Reasoning: Barnacles are actually living creatures attached to the boat. Yes. Assuming all you have is gore/filth and not a living creature attached to you.

    D&D 5E (2014) Monsters w/ Magic Items?

Easy, intelligent monsters use the items they have assuming it is something they would find useful. Dragon's aren't going to wear armor or wield swords (unless they are polymorphed) but it would use that ring of protection or stone of good luck.

D&D 5E (2014) Do things cleaned by Prestidigitation stay clean after the duration is over?

I've always ruled yes (assuming no other dirt gets on the item cleaned).

    D&D 5E (2014) I don't care anymore! The Magic shope is OPEN!

My homebrew world that has existed for the last 17 years has always included magic shops (all run by an overarching Wizard's guild), so I continue to run them. Most of the time there's mainly uncommon and a few rare items, but they exist mostly for the players to come up with their own magic...

Over Half Of New D&D Players Got Into Game From Watching Online Play

I like to watch people play games for a variety of reasons. One, to learn from them. For instance, I have almost a thousand hours on EU IV. I thought I was pretty decent at it. Then I started watching people like DDRJake (before he went to Paradox), Arumba, and Florryworry and quickly...

D&D 5E (2014) Paladin: Why Are They Often Considered Highly Powerful?

I'm jumping back a couple pages, but I'd say that Bards (and especially Lore bards) are the class that has the most positive impact on parties. Being able to snipe the best buff spells across spell lists along with Cutting Words and Bardic Inspiration is more powerful than the aura, IME. On...

    D&D 5E (2014) Survivor Capstones- BARBARIAN WINS!

Barbarian (Primal Champion) 22- The best one by far Bard (Superior Inspiration) 10- My favorite class has the least powerful capstone. Cleric (Divine Intervention Auto) 20 Druid (Archdruid) 19 Fighter (Third Extra Attack) 17 Monk (Perfect Self) 18 Paladin (Sacred Oath Feature/Varies) 21 Ranger...
