D&D 5E (2014) 5e PHB Warlock Advancement Table Spells max 5th Level but Spell list max 9th Level

Sorry for being curt, I was typing on my phone. I certainly don't blame you either, since it seems to be a very common error even among people who are clearly pretty experienced and tuned in to 5e.

D&D 5E (2014) Class Analysis: Fighter and Bard

First off, that's not how I interpret hp to work, but let's not go down that rabbit hole. The point is, many people do want to play that way. Telling them it's unrealistic or silly won't get you far. So they get, by my count, 5 out of the 40+ subclasses in the PHB to work with. If you want a...

D&D 5E (2014) Class Analysis: Fighter and Bard

To be a bit more nuanced, i do think it's fair to say, "if you want to do clearly supernatural things, like punch through iron doors and leap half a football field, don't play the two "badass normal" classes (fighter and rogue)."

D&D 5E (2014) Warlock, Pact of the Blade, Melee

I disagree. If this was how it worked, you could go whatever 18/warlock 2 and get max-level invocations with no investment in the class.

D&D 5E (2014) 5e PHB Warlock Advancement Table Spells max 5th Level but Spell list max 9th Level

Yes, you are. Mystic Incarnum, level 11. Why is there a new thread like twice a day by someone who apparently reads rules pretty carefully and STILL misses this? Is it worded particularly poorly?

D&D 5E (2014) Class Analysis: Fighter and Bard

While I'm still cautiously of the opinion that "caster supremacy" isn't a big problem (with many provisos which I'll explain below), I want to thank Jack the Lad for his detailed and informative arguments on this issue. If I were scoring a debate here he would frankly have won pages ago, because...

D&D 5E (2014) Class Analysis: Fighter and Bard

This argument breaks down pretty easily. Fighters and casters are about equivalent in combat effectiveness but casters have more utility. There are three ways to "fix" this: 1. Give fighters more utility. 2. Nerf caster utility. 3. Nerf caster combat effectiveness. Now, IMHO #3 is right out...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5th Edition -- Caster Rule, Martials Drool?

In keeping with the spirit of this thread, I'd love to hear more anecdotes about this plays out in actual play. Like, when your party is level 5, the wizard has 8-9 spells prepared and can cast, what, two third-level spells? Seems like enough room to prepare some utility but probably not enough...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5th Edition -- Caster Rule, Martials Drool?

I think the lfqw thing doesn't technically apply nearly as much in 5e, REGARDLESS of whether casters are overpowered at high levels. The whole "quadratic" part for wizards was because their low-level spells scaled without using higher-level slots. That's not the case anymore, so you might want...

D&D 5E (2014) Class Analysis: Fighter and Bard

Just to respond to the idea that "if it's a class's job to hit stuff they should be awesome at it:" the trick is that in many campaigns, 90% of the game is either combat or free-form roleplaying. Look at the Acquisitions Inc stuff, for example: maybe two hours of roleplaying with maybe a few...

D&D 5E (2014) Warlock, Pact of the Blade, Melee

Actually, you are automatically proficient in your pact weapon, whatever form it takes. That means the only barrier to playing a strength-based warlock is armor proficiency, which you can get either by multiclassing (starting as fighter1 works quite nicely), by playing a mountain dwarf (good...

D&D 5E (2014) Class Analysis: Fighter and Bard

If the goal is to help everyone subjectively FEEL helpful, part of the trick is probably to ensure that everyone can do something useful every turn, and can occasionally take the spotlight. Fighters can do both in combat (thanks to Action Surge and to legendary resistances), but not so much out...

    D&D 5E (2014) Improving the Fighter's Stickiness

This is my favorite so far. I could also see it as a feat. I'd probably word it like this: Guardian Stance When you take the attack action on your turn, you can choose to forgo one of your attacks to protect your nearby allies. Until the beginning of your next turn, all enemies adjacent to you...

D&D 5E (2014) Beware the barbarian in the chainmail bikini! Or, check out the max Barbarian AC!

Nah, you were sort of right; the berserker subclass can "frenzy" for an extra attack each round (as a bonus attack) while raging, but that makes them take a level of exhaustion, so you have to be careful with it. Also, remember that a lot of people won't have maxed Dex, Strength AND Con even by...

D&D 5E (2014) Class Analysis: Fighter and Bard

So, a couple things are going on here that muddy the waters. First off, the bard is using smite spells. This is perfectly legal but also extremely powerful and annoying. (Why is a bard SIGNIFICANTLY better at smiting than a paladin?) I would disallow this as a DM, as a house rule. If you get...

    D&D 5E (2014) Improving the Fighter's Stickiness

To be fair, if KarinsDad is right (and I don't totally disagree with him), bringing the 5e fighter to 4e defender levels of stickiness could be a problem for the game as a whole, just like doubling the rogue's damage to make him feel like more of a striker could be bad. Basically, 5e monsters...

D&D 5E (2014) Class Analysis: Fighter and Bard

I'm betting bards stealing smite wasn't fully intended. Ah well. I do like how I can skim the op's chart and say to myself, "Hmm, fighter has better health and damage almost throughout. Looks legit," while the op's description makes it sound like the fighter is crying in the corner. You know...

    D&D 5E (2014) Improving the Fighter's Stickiness

How about a feat that gives you something like the 4e knight aura: enemies adjacent to you have disadvantage when attacking anyone other than you. No action economy issues, stacks nicely with existing feats and fighter abilities.

    D&D 5E (2014) Perform Skill & Instrument Proficiency redundancy

Tool proficiencies also make it easier to customize the game world. If I'm playing Spelljammer or whatever I don't have to go decide whether rogues can get Piloting as a class skill; I can just make "spaceships" tools you can be proficient in. (And less radically, medieval technology like siege...
