    D&D 5E (2014) Legends & Lore 7/21/14

First, note that at high levels, Resilient (Con) will help your concentration Saves more than War Caster will. (Although at high levels you might have both. Second, if you don't like the human with +1 to everything but also don't like feats, congratulations, you're the Vegan with a soy allergy...

D&D 5E (2014) Interesting talk with Mike Mearls (a few secrets slip too!)

The quote says that your overall average damage is the same. Now ask yourself, would you rather Have your big bursts of damage come randomly, when you happen to crit, or exactly when you choose? If you can't answer that question, you probably shouldn't be playing the tactical option anyway. ;)

    D&D 5E (2014) Player's Handbook Alpha *Spoilers*

Honestly, he needs to finish the final eight books in that series, like, this month. Additional Mistborn books will no longer suffice.

Durable and tough are pretty close in meaning, but resilient means you bounce back.

    D&D 5E (2014) PH(B) Tavern Brawler Feat

This. And since we know there's another specific grappling feat, there could be some cool synergies here. I can't believe they got rid of the alcohol tolerance, though! :(

    D&D 5E (2014) Player's Handbook Alpha *Spoilers*

I'll agree that the eldritch knight is a disappointment (unless it got significantly reworked). But if you're trying to play Kaladin, you should be using a magic class anyway. Surgebinding is not a martial skill.

    D&D 5E (2014) Player's Handbook Alpha *Spoilers*

The alpha leak doesn't reveal any big changes in design philosophy from the playtest, but it does provide some concrete evidence of stuff a lot of people worry won't be in 5e. Anyone worried about fighters not being good defenders or not having maneuvers could have those worried assuaged...

    D&D 5E (2014) PH(B) Soldier Background (Art is new)

Or maybe mono no aware, to follow the style of the costume. Which I really dig about this piece: to me it captures some of the essence of traditional Japanese depictions of warriors AND depictions of women, all without seeming contradictory or even contrasting with the more Western- focused...

    D&D 5E (2014) Revisiting Mearls and Co

I'd like to hear him revisit subclasses. They were an idea that grew in prominence during the playtest process, and frankly they do a few different things now, and differ depending on class. For example, the wizard and cleric subclasses seem to be almost entirely about customizing what your...

    D&D 5E (2014) Background Page from PH(B)

I've actually liked most of the other art a lot, but I'm not a particular fan of this guy's pose. The dwarf, for example, looked like she was about to kick some butt; this guy looks like he has a slight case of indigestion. Portraits are fine, but there's a way to make them a bit more dynamic...

    D&D 5E (2014) How to slow the 5E treadmill?

    1. No OGL. From a business perspective, it just doesn't make sense to allow another company to sell books that are 90% your content. All the OGL does is ensure that WOTC keeps making big revisions to the rules, or else they risk Paizo or whoever sapping their profits by selling a shinier 5e a...

D&D 5E (2014) So Is The Dex Based Fighter Just Strictly Better?

So the problem is that right now, in Basic, one particular build of the fighter class that you would expect to be best with Strength is arguably best with Dex instead. I agree this isn't ideal. But the PHB will add feats, maneuvers, and classes that may well tilt the balance back in favor of...

D&D 5E (2014) What PHB class are you most anticipating?

Fighter! I really want to see the eldritch knight and weapon master.

    D&D 5E (2014) Tiefling preview!

I would wager that there is either a part of the description or a sidebar about demonic tieflings. Given the amount of space they spend describing 30 different kinds of high elves across all their campaign worlds, I would be shocked if they just ignored pre-4e tieflings.

D&D 5E (2014) We Played 5th Edition for the First Time Last Night

I do feel like time spent on character creation can be good or bad. If you're spending more time because you have lots of interesting decisions to make, I'm happy; if you're spending a lot of time doing math and allocating piddly bonuses, I'm less thrilled. For example, the extra time it takes...

D&D 5E (2014) Thoughts on the new approach to Feats

I'd add a couple more: Greatweapon Master: the cleave part is fine, but Power Attack has always seemed too math-finicky for its intended use to me. Right now it's incredible for raging barbarians but not very good when you're not guaranteed advantage. Heavy Armor: I hate DR. All the boredom...

D&D 5E (2014) The Barbarian has been Nerfed YET AGAIN. Where is Thick Hide?

Maybe your ninja barbarian can hang out with my dragon sorcerer! :p Seriously though, it sounds like your character was one of those offbeat builds that isn't optimal for the class, but works anyway because the class is overpowered enough to make up for it. Tough hide simply didn't fit the...

D&D 5E (2014) D&D Next will succeed or die on the basis of its digital apps.

I'd say D&D Next will have the best chance of succeeding if you don't NEED digital tools just to play it effectively. 4e required a LOT of work to keep track of conditions, zones, status effects, expended powers, magic items, etc. Hopefully Next will have the core simplified enough that the...

    D&D 5E (2014) 2/11/13 L&L: This week in D&D

Just to be clear, last we heard the Basic game was going to let each class have "training" in all checks with one ability - eg fighters add their skill die to all str checks. So the skill system is sort of there in skeletal form - certainly enough for a stripped-down game like Basic (which...

    D&D 5E (2014) 2/11/13 L&L: This week in D&D

Because the core mechanic is ability checks, and the current skill system is only one way to augment that. You could also use open-ended skills, or a more 3e-style system with ranks, or any number of other options. By making skills optional (even if they're used by default in the Standard game)...
