D&D 5E (2014) Should Hunter's mark (Ranger spell) drop Concentration requirement?

Yeah, I have to kind of agree here. You're complaining that a fighter narrowly outdamages a ranger, and that a rogue is occasionally better outside of combat. You don't really mention that the ranger pretty handily beats the rogue in combat and the fighter outside of it. If you want to play a...

D&D 5E (2014) 5th edition Monster Manual: I think the really nice art detracts from the mediocre functionality of the book.

The cr index should have been in the MM, but it's free to download and will probably be in the DMG, along with spell points and the death domain and other stuff that arguably could've gone in the PHB.

    D&D 5E (2014) Harry Potter School Quests

TEN POINTS FOR GRIFFENDOR So it's a general "adventure" school? Are their rogue and fighter instructors? Makes for fun dynamics. Fingers, the Infiltrations teacher, gives the advanced class their midterm: they have to steal a certain object from the Abjuration professor's study. Meanwhile, the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Combining player-directed search with skill-based searching

FWIW, some Actor-type players might be "interested" in the search but still have their characters suck at it. For example, my barbarian "searching" for something would probably mostly reveal stuff hidden in the furniture he's smashing, and not so much the envelope glued to the bottom of the desk.

D&D 5E (2014) Identify Spell vs Resting With Item

I take the tiers as kind of a useful guide here: a king's most prominent knights, viziers, etc. should probably be in the level 11-16 range, guiding the fate of the kingdom. Anyone level 17+ I'd in the borderline-epic tier and probably isn't for hire - they're focused on larger issues than the...

D&D 5E (2014) Identify Spell vs Resting With Item

The abundance of magic items in the world scales proportionally with the magic level and power level of the world in general. If high-level characters and warding magic is rare, the king isn't going to be able to protect his artifact dagger from enterprising high-level rogues and illusionists...

    D&D 5E (2014) What can I teach a sorcerer?

Is he the only sorcerer in the party? If so you could play up the danger of sorcery and suggest that he needs a mentor to stay safely in control of his powers. (If he's a wild mage you could tie this into the random spell chart somehow.) I also like the "training as a magic item" system from...

D&D 5E (2014) Heavy Armour Master and Resistance

That warlock is investing at least one class level AND a feat to get Heavy Armor Master... let him have his "overpowered" fun. ;)

    D&D 5E (2014) First Session of HotDQ - WOW, what a meatgrinder

So "recent" started in the early to mid 90s? Meaning it has now existed for longer than that lost golden age of rolling a new character every other session? Seems like that trend might stick around a while. ;) Anyway, an unwinnable fight is fine, but you'll notice that when you lose to the...

D&D 5E (2014) I got inspired by this picture. How do I flesh him out as the Big Bad?

There's a sweet dream spell too, so he can invade the party's mind and screw with their dreams in advance...

    D&D 5E (2014) Blade Pact and Sentient/Artifact Weapons

My actual idea was to play the weapon itself as my character, and blame all my bad rolls on the moron level 1 fighter who picked me up and got dominated. "Well, the plan was to run over and chop off the goblin's head, but (I rolled a 1 so) Tim here swung me too soon and wedged me into a wall...

D&D 5E (2014) The 5th edition PHB: Sorry but when it comes to functionality, it deserves a 'one star' rating.

Op is overblown, but the layout of the spells is indeed terrible. Picking a spell to learn means flipping through an 80-page chapter for like 15 minutes minimum. I get the page count limitations but it's honestly just dumb that they haven't put official class-specific quick-reference PDFs on the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Blade Pact and Sentient/Artifact Weapons

I kinda want to play a blade lock who makes a pact with his weapon.

D&D 5E (2014) Does WotC suck at selling games?

So the premise is that WOTC needs to do more to engage with people who haven't played TTRPGs before and convince them to DM. The chicken-and-egg problem here is that this is like asking someone who's never seen a movie to become a director. I could see the value of a very "on the rails" starter...

D&D 5E (2014) Does WotC suck at selling games?

As I said, awareness is a precondition if interest. And it's not like you and I came out of the womb caring about d&d. Something struck our interest and we pursued it from there. Right now, there happen to be a lot more people exposed to those tropes than there were 20 years ago, which means...

D&D 5E (2014) Does WotC suck at selling games?

    1. Okay, orcs. 2. The former is actually a prerequisite for the latter. So an increase the former should be correlated by an increase in the latter.

    D&D 5E (2014) Is 5e the ultimate D&D system for a true sandbox campaign?

I think bounded accuracy works great both ways. Yes, as others have said, it means that a horde of orcs is threatening to a high-level party, which is useful. By the same token, though, a dozen militiamen with crossbows are (somewhat) dangerous to a dragon. So if your sandbox has a village being...

D&D 5E (2014) Does WotC suck at selling games?

I disagree. The mass adoption of formerly geeky things like the fantasy genre (LotR, Game of Thrones) and cooperative strategy games (WoW) means that concepts and details that might have been a barrier to entry 20 years ago aren't anymore. A typical 14-year-old doesn't need to be told what an...
