    D&D 5E (2014) On FAQs and Twitter

There are plenty of unclear bits of the PHB that shouldn't come down to DM fiat, not because the DM is a tyrant bound only by the law of the rulebook, but because it's inconvenient to require his intercession in basic stuff. Like, the PHB is unclear whether a level 5 warlock with 16 charisma...

D&D 5E (2014) Does WotC suck at selling games?

By that logic, the only successful PC games are diablo II and the Deer Hunter series, because those are the only PC games I see in Wal-Mart. I bet these concerns about retail presence are overblown. Why worry about getting a display up at Waldenbooks - oops, Borders - oops again, Barnes and...

    D&D 5E (2014) Optimal Multiclassing

If a class gives you d6 hit dice and others give you d10s, is it really balanced? Same answer: you have to look at the whole class, not try to take individual elements in isolation.

D&D 5E (2014) Polearm Master vs Great Weapon Master

I think I started with War caster to allow the hellish rebuke (along with help on concentration and the cool spell aoo thing). But yeah, it's hard to find enough feats to enable all the sweet combos for this class without gimping strength or charisma.

D&D 5E (2014) Polearm Master vs Great Weapon Master

Related concept: armor of agathys, fire shield, and hellish rebuke: porcupine warlock for the win?

D&D 5E (2014) Polearm Master vs Great Weapon Master

I'd double-check polearm master + war caster with the DM first. Personally I'm not sure I'd allow it. But if you're using one of your precious spell slots on armor of agathys, why not take heavy armor master instead? That's more hits you get to take while reflecting damage...

    D&D 5E (2014) Mundane Healing

Inspiring Leader is mundane kinda-sorta healing, as is the battlemaster rally maneuver.

    What feats are "missing"?

Hmmm. If the goal is an unarmored character with a 2h weapon, might I ask what's wrong with a level of barbarian? That plus avenger paladin would seem to fit the bill already.

    What feats are "missing"?

I'd like more feats that let you use your mental stats tactically without magic. Inspiring Leader is great, but I'd love to see a few more, especially for enhancing the int-heavy "tactician" type.

    D&D 5E (2014) Optimal Multiclassing

Fighter and rogue are pretty tempting two-level dips as well. Up it to three levels and Battlemaster takes the gold IMHO. Conversely, let's have nominees for the "primary" classes that benefit most from a one-level dip elsewhere. Wizards are clear winners here, since they have the worst...

    D&D 5E (2014) Optimal Multiclassing

I think this is an issue that seems like a bigger deal than it should be in practice. It's a case of them not bothering with unnecessary symmetry for a good reason: the basic point of mc stat prereqs is to "keep you honest," so that you don't dip into a class that's completely unrelated to your...

    D&D 5E (2014) Rapier & Hand Crossbow Rogue

This might work nicely for fighters too, since they have less competition for their bonus action.

    D&D 5E (2014) Help with Warlock concept

One thing I often consider with a blade-pact warlock is a single level of multiclassed fighter (or two of ranger or paladin, depending on stats and character). A level or two of rogue is also a decent option, especially since it seems your character will make good use of the skill bonuses and...

    D&D 5E (2014) Optimal Multiclassing

The problem is that in your system, taking level 5 in a martial class is ALWAYS worse than multiclassing, since you've basically stripped away their big level 5 ability.

    D&D 5E (2014) Optimal Multiclassing

I don't see it as a problem. Sure, a ftr4/barb4 is worse than a ftr5/barb3 most of the time, but a wiz4/clr4 is worse than a wiz5/clr3 too. Personally, I like starting with ftr1/barb1 or whatever, then taking one class all the way to 5, then evening them out a bit. That way you're only behind...

D&D 5E (2014) DMG release date pushed back

I wonder whether initial feedback to the PHB will affect the content they end up putting in the DMG. Overall the least pleased group of fans (from my biased perspective) seems to be those who wanted more tactical combat and those who wanted more utility for non-casters, both of which could well...

D&D 5E (2014) Martial Characters vs Real World Athletes

There is in fact a system in place to allow for complete or martial failures without derailing the heroic story arc. It's called hit points. I can miss a blow or have a monster resist my cone of cold or whatever without just losing the game because the consequence of my victory is a reduction in...

D&D 5E (2014) Martial Characters vs Real World Athletes

The easy answer here is that it's bad that RAW, you are pretty restricted in how you can create such a mythic warrior, and it takes a lot of hand-waving of mechanics that were designed for another effect, and usually The harsher answer (which I mostly disagree with but whose logic I understand)...
