How? In the build I have the character builder isn’t available and we only have the 5 pregen maps. I can customize those, but there’s no way to build a new map I can find.

That’s very much the opposite of what you’ve been suggesting. Removing the art and flavor of the backgrounds and just condensing it all to a single page of “feat, skills, tools,” like you’ve suggested is stripping everything but mechanics from backgrounds my dude.

The D&D Beyond write-up specifically says the book will focus on "five in-depth setting guides for iconic locations in the Forgotten Realms" and then mentions: Baldur’s Gate Calimshan The Dalelands Moonshae Isles Icewind Dale Those are the areas it will cover in-depth, they made that clear.

It works like it did in the 2014 book as far as I can tell. You create a Skeleton or Zombie with it, can have up to 4 with the base spell, and get up to 2 more each upcast.
