  1. Nemesis Destiny

D&D 5E (2014) D&DN going down the wrong path for everyone.

You know, I (and I think probably for the most part "we") could handle that, if it were constructive criticism. Most 4e supporters are more than willing to admit that the game wasn't perfect and could certainly have been improved upon. But it goes beyond that. There are folks who take every...

D&D 5E (2014) D&DN going down the wrong path for everyone.

No, it never happens, because as soon as someone makes the comparison, the dung starts to fly, and most of it is aimed at 4e; the red-headed stepchild of D&D-dom. Naturally, the 4e adherents come to the defence of their edition of choice, which is more or less constantly under attack. No amount...

D&D 5E (2014) D&DN going down the wrong path for everyone.

Very much this. The fact that a lot of the modules were not put together to take advantage of 4e's strengths certainly don't help matters any.
  4. Nemesis Destiny

    D&D 5E (2014) Legends & Lore 4/1/2013

I just want to say that I am deeply saddened by this, and yet, I understand your reasons fully. I did similar last year and only recently returned in the hope that things had improved. As you (and I, now) have discovered, they really haven't. Your insight and presence will be missed here. :/
  5. Nemesis Destiny

Kobold Paladin of Bahamut - Pick+Shield vs Heavy Pick

If mark violations are rare, then you probably want defence, since it implies that you will be attacked a lot, so you probably want as many of them to miss you as possible. Pick Expertise and WP in Serrated Pick will help with your damage.
  6. Nemesis Destiny

    D&D 5E (2014) Legends & Lore 4/1/2013

Time will tell. At this point, it's going to have to be one heck of a module to get my gaming dollar... Much the same way as I find that other editions have been constraining to my creativity. It sounded like you were saying that 4e did not have emphasis on storytelling in favour of tactics, or...
  7. Nemesis Destiny

What was the first Dungeons and Dragons rule system you used?

For me it depends entirely on the piece in question. Some images resonate more strongly with me than others, and often for reasons I don't understand. Take the image I asked about - it's not what I would consider aesthetically pleasing, and it shows a rather unpleasant narrative, but I think it...
  8. Nemesis Destiny

    D&D 5E (2014) Legends & Lore 4/1/2013

That's not what I'm saying at all. If people want that kind of game - more power to them. My point is that, how the options to achieve both this style of game, and also the one I prefer, are presented will determine the default culture around the table. If the game presumes that you will use a...
  9. Nemesis Destiny

    D&D 5E (2014) Legends & Lore 4/1/2013

I'm not talking about basic or standard or advanced. I'm talking about the culture at individual tables. That's why I said that unless the rules are very specific about just how optional such things are, then there will be a "culture of mandatory," and not using them will feel like cheating to...
  10. Nemesis Destiny

    D&D 5E (2014) Legends & Lore 4/1/2013

See, the problem I have with all this is that in 5e you *can* play like 4e (if it's more than just a tacked-on tactical module), maybe, if the DM says so, and I think that's... just an awful compromise. Most groups *won't* because there will be rules to handle all kinds of sim BS like in 3.x...
  11. Nemesis Destiny

    D&D 5E (2014) Legends & Lore 4/1/2013

This becomes tricky, in the example used above, if an ability lets a character push another creature away, but then forces that character to deal with all kinds of annoying things like creature size. Suddenly, the pushing character is de-protagonized in a big way. Especially since traditionally...
  12. Nemesis Destiny

Kobold Paladin of Bahamut - Pick+Shield vs Heavy Pick

Paladins tend, IME, to be minion-magnets for that reason. Especially if you take a lot of mass-mark abilities.
  13. Nemesis Destiny

    D&D 5E (2014) Legends & Lore 4/1/2013

Yeah, that's part of it. I feel like there's more to it, but I'm having trouble trying to articulate what I mean. Another part of it also touches on caster-warrior balance issues, which are much less pronounced in 4e. This is another thing which I'm having trouble trying to articulate at the...
  14. Nemesis Destiny

Kobold Paladin of Bahamut - Pick+Shield vs Heavy Pick

That is a good point. Also, Pick Expertise is quite good for that as well; +1 damage if your target is larger than you, and as a kobold, that's a lot of things.
  15. Nemesis Destiny

    D&D 5E (2014) Legends & Lore 4/1/2013

So, other than some initial confusion, is there a reason we're still dwelling on this one tiny element of the answer to the question that was asked? I think we've answered it sufficiently.
  16. Nemesis Destiny

    D&D 5E (2014) Legends & Lore 4/1/2013

No, simple refluffing is part of it, but not all. In previous editions, (and in Next so far) when you bull rush or cleave, the game rules are very clear about spelling out exactly what is happening in the fiction. In 4e you get a power and it has an effect - describe any way you like. Further...
  17. Nemesis Destiny

    D&D 5E (2014) Legends & Lore 4/1/2013

The player's handbook also specifically spells out that you are allowed and in fact encourage to alter this to suit. The default flavour presentation of these things is intended as a suggestion. It's fairly explicit. Pick a non-magical power. Most of them grant a non-magical character more...
  18. Nemesis Destiny

Kobold Paladin of Bahamut - Pick+Shield vs Heavy Pick

I've built paladins both ways (weapon & board as well as two-hander). It depends on what you're after - survivability or damage output. The paladin class is pretty flexible in 4e, so you can go either way, depending on your stats. If you're going Cha-based, then you're probably better off...
  19. Nemesis Destiny

    D&D 5E (2014) Legends & Lore 4/1/2013

I have a feeling I'm going to regret joining this thread. I can't speak for exactly what the Jester means here, but I might add that it has something to do with everyone potentially having access to more narrative control than before (*if* they want it), not just the ones wearing the "magic"...
  20. Nemesis Destiny

D&D 5E (2014) D&DN going down the wrong path for everyone.

For my part, I was very ready for 3e at the end of the 2nd ed era. I was sick of boring fighters, sick of limited options, and really sick of all the fiddly rules subsystems, so the promise that 3e made of warriors with options, more diverse characters, and a unified, internally-consistent game...
