    D&D 5E (2014) D&D podcast!

Fair enough, and more power to them; I guess they're building a game I won't run then. So much for "inclusivity" and the "big tent" approach. I think his argument is flawed, and others have pointed out a plethora of reasons why that is. I think they do have a place in the imagined game world...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D podcast!

Sorry, that doesn't cut it for me; that's ramming a square peg into a round hole. And thanks for the condescending tone, I appreciate it. It will really help sell me on your position. I realize you've spent a lot of words explaining your position, and why it works for you, but it doesn't make...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D podcast!

Personally, I think one of the coolest things about the Warlord class in 4e is how it could be used for the Princess build, or any number of other Lazylord concepts, none of which should be based on a fighter. At all. So, to do the Warlord any justice in Next, said concepts are going to have to...

Is the Burning Wheel "how to play" advice useful for D&D?

Sometimes, depending on the context of what's going on in a given campaign or setting, those associations might be more clear, or send a more clear signal. If, for example, that particular campaign were about a power struggle with the Council of elven F/M/Ts and some other group, if a...

D&D 5E (2014) Legend Lore says 'story not rules' (3/4)

Haha, maybe you have one, but it isn't going to be me :)

D&D 5E (2014) Legend Lore says 'story not rules' (3/4)

    Yes, that's what I mean :p Indeed. (no, and I can't remember)

D&D 5E (2014) Second Wind: Yes or No?

They probably *won't* be in the core, but that's not what this poll was addressing. The poll only asked if Next should have them at all. The vast majority (over 80%) of respondents have indicated that it should be present in the game some form, which, if they're being true to their stated aims...

Is the Burning Wheel "how to play" advice useful for D&D?

At no point did I advocate changing alignment as a frivolous thing. At no point did I state that alignment MUST change to reflect character growth. However, I do feel that sometimes, it is appropriate to do so. In my character's arcs that I described, they were definitely at what you would call...

D&D 5E (2014) Second Wind: Yes or No?

And if it's an option, with one of their much-talked-about "dials" - then it should have many settings, including, "off," "daily," "encounter," and perhaps even "At-will." Because why not. Don't like SW? Switch dial to "off." Want it as a daily? Switch dial to appropriate setting. Liked it...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D podcast!

I can't address fictional characters in novels or movies, because I didn't write them, but I *can* do so for my D&D characters. I've had a character since the AD&D days that I *have* always thought about in the terms you mention above, "She's a Fighter, but really there's so much more. If only...

Is the Burning Wheel "how to play" advice useful for D&D?

Insightful post; basically confirms my feelings on the issue. D'karr does a decent summary of my feelings on the issue of Alignment in D&D, and especially in AD&D: Especially the last sentence. Alignment is ALL stick and ZERO carrot, by RAW, especially AD&D. There was always the ad hoc xp...
  12. Nemesis Destiny

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D podcast!

This podcast does not bode well for my hopes for 5e. It's been blow after blow after blow to my interest levels; at this point I am seriously questioning why I even care. Warlord needs to be its own thing. Until I experienced them in 4e, it was the class that I didn't know I was missing all...

Level 10 PC recommendations for Lair Assault

If you want to play a striker with some fun mobility tricks that is hard to nail down, a Warlock or Hexblade with Ethereal Sidestep and some Eladrin chainmail (or ringmail) and a few other support items can get you a disgustingly good at-will teleport. There is a dagger that adds to teleport...

D&D 5E (2014) Legend Lore says 'story not rules' (3/4)

EDIT: For some reason, I can't see the intervening 14 posts between mine and #280. I think this just illustrates that there is more than one way to approach the issue, and it seems to come down to a matter of preference. Some seem to prefer that the story should flow from what the rules say are...

D&D 5E (2014) Legend Lore says 'story not rules' (3/4)

Good post, I think you nailed it, and I fully agree; that makes complete sense to me and was always how I interpreted it. I tried to XP you but, alas, could not :)

Is the Burning Wheel "how to play" advice useful for D&D?

Thanks again. I think it's clear now. Likely the only thing to make it any clearer would be to read the book and play the game. Sounds interesting. If it was something a group was interested in and wanted to do, it sounds like those two elements could easily be ported wholesale into D&D, unless...

Is the Burning Wheel "how to play" advice useful for D&D?

Ok, that helps, thanks. Can you give me examples of how the game might leverage Beliefs or Instincts?
  18. Nemesis Destiny

D&D 5E (2014) Second Wind: Yes or No?

At the cost of a Standard Action, definitely. If you can make it into a Minor or Free Action (i.e. if you're playing a Dwarf or have an item that improves SW, etc), it becomes much more compelling an option, even with its inherent inefficiency.

Is the Burning Wheel "how to play" advice useful for D&D?

Good thread idea, pemerton! I will say that I think the advice is potentially very applicable, depending on the desired play style of the group. For me and my group, it certainly is; the advice here underscores all the things that have 'gone right' in some of the more enjoyable campaigns I've...
