For me, I think it would be a pretty quick check list. Set them side-by-side and pick how each game handles a thing. Smooth out any trouble from there. I’m not sure 5E itself would get much representation beyond the influence it had on Shadowdark and Daggerheart.

I agree completely. I'm not sure we'd entirely agree on what bits and pieces should be included though.

It looks far more coincidental than homage. There'd be a lot more similarities if it were intentional. "A castle on a hill at sunset" is pretty generic.

The poll and question seems to be asking two unconnected questions. Scripted assumes both tightly balanced and predetermined vs entirely randomly generated on a roll table. There are more options between those two ends. Predetermined but not tightly balanced. Various levels of balance...

I would not say the retroclone has to be exactly the same. There absolutely is wiggle room for some slight changes. Flipping AC, for example. Just about every game that’s recognizable as a retroclone has some rules changes. Most are house rules the creator’s table plays with to make things...

HOAs are all about conformity. Hell, most of society is all about forcing the square peg into the round hole. Don’t live somewhere with an HOA if you want the ability to do what you want with your house. HOAs suck. They’re indefensible except from a property value standpoint. Even then...

To me, a retroclone is defined by copying the rules of an older game as closely as possible. Like Old-School Essentials. There are plenty of great games out there that copy the feel of the old-school games, but they're not retroclones. Like Shadowdark.

Childhood education, say in the K-1 range, in a society that's not zero-sum would more than handle that.
