D&D 5E (2014) Ack! Sleeping in Hobgoblin Barracks (Lost Mine of Phandelver)

Does the group have a sentry? Unless the hobgoblins are trying to be sneaky, the PCs will hear them approach as they get off shift—talking and complaining. "Where the hell are our replacements?" In fact, only a few might show up at first, looking for the relief crew. This degree of "oh crap!"...

    D&D 5E (2014) Holy crap, that's cool

I now need to set an adventure in a basilisk breeding pit, in complete darkness.

D&D 5E (2014) Do Otyughs literally eat... (dung)???

Not only do they eat it, they savor it. They treasure it. Woe betide anyone breaking into a neo-otyugh's treasure vault...

D&D 5E (2014) The "need" for "official rulings"...?

This. I'm delighted to break rules, but it's useful for me to know the designer's original intent first.

    D&D 5E (2014) Speed Factor Initiative Modifiers

If you wanted a "change your action" house rule when using speed factors, here's something I'd adapt from the trailin' rule in Owl Hoot Trail: If you want to change your action, you instead go at the end of the round, after every other combatant has acted. Your action gains Disadvantage; if...

    Reviewing Chris Perkins

He's superb. I'll rank him with the top 10 GMs I've ever gamed with (out of several hundred), AND he can hand-draw gorgeous maps. Bastard.

    D&D 5E (2014) How do royalty die in D&D?

In my campaign, the term "God-King" is quite literal. When the divine spirit passes to a new mortal shell, the old King is no longer relevant, even if someone raises him from death.

D&D 5E (2014) What benefit to Delayed Blast Fireball?

Last night, the heroes used telekinesis to throw the evil wizard into his own, unexploded, 21d6 DBF. It was glorious.

    D&D 5E (2014) What is the logic behind one 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th level spell?

Converted over two separate 21st lvl 4e campaigns.

D&D 5E (2014) What to do when Pc's die? What then for that player?

I'll be the first to say that my pet peeves aren't necessarily anyone else's. This is a good case of "whatever works well for you." Me, I really like PCs of a standard level in most cases. I think it's cool when other DMs can make a big level split work well and be fun for everyone.

D&D 5E (2014) What to do when Pc's die? What then for that player?

When a PC dies, I start the new PC at the same level as all the other PCs in the group. I'm much happier doing it this way than coming in at first level, being resentful and/or fragile, and staying less powerful than their peers.

D&D 5E (2014) Song of Rest stacking question

I'd definitely let it happen. It's a minor power, and kind of a cool one.

D&D 5E (2014) Best disposal of body or item spell!

Oh, evil artifact, NOT murdered backstabbed party member? Um, right. That's totally what I was thinking too.

D&D 5E (2014) What benefit to Delayed Blast Fireball?

It pairs well with Time Stop. Other than that, I've got nuthin'.

Hey Shadowdweller00, please see my note in your post 22. If you have any questions, shoot me a PM. Thanks.

    D&D 5E (2014) What is the logic behind one 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th level spell?

"Where's Jerry?" "I'm not sure, but it sure is dusty in here."

    D&D 5E (2014) What is the logic behind one 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th level spell?

You'd think so, right? Except the default archmage in the MM doesn't have it prepared. That'll teach me.

    D&D 5E (2014) What is the logic behind one 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th level spell?

I just had a PC forcecage an archmage, which also shut down teleportation. AWKWARD. Try explaining that to your apprentices back at your tower...

    D&D 5E (2014) Bounded accurancy and skills

I love the GUMSHOE approach, which means that player characters automatically know something if they're trained in a skill and the clue is necessary or useful for the adventure. Never make them roll for information they need. I do this a lot. Trained in Arcana? Here's all this information...

    D&D 5E (2014) What is the logic behind one 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th level spell?

As someone who is running two 15th lvl games, I'll agree that mid-level spells remain both relevant and effective. We haven't found the limitation to be a problem.
