D&D 5E (2014) Is it possible to have a good-aligned final boss in a good campaign?

Not necessarily. Good people clash all the time in the real world due to conflicting responsibilities, not to mention old grudges and complicated misunderstandings. I agree that being railroaded into actually killing a good foe would kind of suck. I'd prefer several alternative solutions for...

D&D 5E (2014) Supplemental books: Why the compulsion to buy and use, but complain about it?

Quit that, you! At this point we've all made it clear that it's not a binary issue, it's a continuum. I don't think ANYONE is arguing that "DMs must make unilateral edicts" or "players must always get their every preference." The question comes in where the proverbial rubber meets the road, and...

D&D 5E (2014) DM purposely gimping my Warlock

I concur. The character class balance is predicated on more frequent short rests; messing with that is going to really throttle down the fun for classes who get powers-per-short-rest instead of powers-per-long-rest. I'd change characters, or respectfully explain to the DM why I was dropping out.

D&D 5E (2014) Supplemental books: Why the compulsion to buy and use, but complain about it?

Weirdly, I don't really like dragonborn but I LOVE lizardfolk. If someone wanted to make a lizardfolk PC who could spit poison, I'd be all over that... and then just use the dragonborn stats. Damn, I'm fickle.

D&D 5E (2014) Is it possible to have a good-aligned final boss in a good campaign?

The way to do this, I suspect, is to make the good-aligned enemy acting for the good of his or her own people -- and that good is antithetical to the people/country/needs of the PCs. For instance, imagine a case where earthquakes and volcanoes are prophesized to destroy an area, and there is...

D&D 5E (2014) Player characters as heirs and eventually rulers

Sure! I'm doing something similar as well, with the PCs as the kids and their retainers of an incredibly powerful imperial family. It's crazy amounts of fun. You can thrust them into tricky political situations where they have WAY more at stake than just their lives. As a result, they're forced...

    D&D 5E (2014) 'Once per turn'

It does, yes. The rogue's big downside in regular combat is that they only get one attack a round usually, so if they miss, they're doing no sneak attack damage. That makes them more swingy than (say) the fighter. Balance-wise, my suspicion is that the extra chance to do sneak attack damage when...

D&D 5E (2014) How are you going to play 5e and why?

Typing on my phone has a lot to answer for! Right, lvl 20-21. Thank Dog, so far I'm having more fun than I have in years. I've been finding high-lvl 4e to be ponderous. I feel like I'm back in charge of magic item and monster creation, and even if that's purely in my head, it's still a real...

D&D 5E (2014) How are you going to play 5e and why?

We've provisionally converted both epic-lvl 4e campaigns over to 5e. (lvl 21 in 4e = lvl 15 in 5e.) We'll play those for a while and make sure everyone is having as much or more fun than they did in 4e. I'm also running a 5e pickup game for new or infrequent players, running Phandelver at...

I did! Sorry about that. Late night posting on a phone. :)

    D&D 5E (2014) 'Once per turn'

Mordaken Thank Dog, that interpretation is incorrect. I asked Mearls this when I was looking at the Battle Master granting the rogue an extra attack. He confirmed that the rogue would get an additional sneak attack with his reaction, because it was someone else's turn. Edit: sorry, Mordaken!

Alternate System to the Jenga Tower

Agreed. I celebrate what you've done here -- and man, is that a lot of work -- but it's really its own beast.

    D&D 5E (2014) A Glimpse Of High-Level Play

It's interesting. We don't have those same durability builds, but we're really just starting high-lvl 5e play. I'll keep you updated as to whether they turn out to be necessary.

D&D 5E (2014) Supplemental books: Why the compulsion to buy and use, but complain about it?

It sounds to me that what the game would have been improved by is the DM saying no and then not inviting the player to play. I wasn't there, I don't know, but it doesn't sound to me like poor DMing is the problem here. It sounds like an entitled player trying to take their ball and go home. My...

D&D 5E (2014) Supplemental books: Why the compulsion to buy and use, but complain about it?

We're not all going to agree on this one. Time to put down the battle axes and move on. I'd rather not close it -- it's a fun discussion, overall -- but we're not going to get anywhere until we recognize that condemning someone's actions at a game we weren't at isn't particularly fruitful.

In 5e, I think a non-raging barbarian is someone with the "outsider" background.

    D&D 5E (2014) A Glimpse Of High-Level Play

Thanks, that's really kind. I have a number of complications I haven't mentioned -- spoiler block for my players -- -- the empire is in the middle of civil war, the "empress" has no legal right to the position, the "empress" is evil but is doing what she honestly believes is best for the...

    D&D 5E (2014) I think a cantrip somewhat cripples the CR 16 marilith

No resistance here, shockingly enough. Ohm really grateful for the ideas!

D&D 5E (2014) Supplemental books: Why the compulsion to buy and use, but complain about it?

And you know what? I think I'm okay with that. It wouldn't mean that we like each other less, it'd just mean that neither of us could compromise. I'd respect them enough to let them go find a more appropriate game if that were the case, or I'd encourage them to GM their own campaign where guns...
