    D&D 5E (2014) Phantasmal Killer?

This thread does my heart good. I had a NPC cast it at a PC, expecting the normal amount of terror I'd come to expect from earlier editions... and it was a big, fat non-event. I like this interpretation better.

D&D 5E (2014) Primeval Awareness and other hidden gems

I think I'll disagree with you on that one! http://community.wizards.com/forum/player-help/threads/4142801 Briefly off-topic, but worth it: thank you for serving. From those who didn't, it's appreciated.

    D&D 5E (2014) Grappling - What am I missing?

Dang it. By a mere four minutes!! That's such a fun thread. I'd never have seen all those possibilities.

    D&D 5E (2014) Grappling - What am I missing?

This is an incredibly cool and useful guide to grappling in 5e. http://community.wizards.com/forum/player-help/threads/4142801

D&D 5E (2014) Primeval Awareness and other hidden gems

That's my group's opinion: when you know there will be trouble, it's money well spent. They set aside an equal share of treasure into the party fund to pay for these sorts of expenses. It currently has some 36K in it, so they're feeling pretty profligate. Another cool trick: one of the cantrips...

D&D 5E (2014) How Often Do You Have NPCs Join the Party?

    >75% of the time. I love having a NPC with the group; it gives me someone to play, it adds depth to the story or plot, and it allows me to make snarky comments in character. Sometimes the group picks their companion; one of my groups picked up a kobold cartwright on their 2nd session 6 years...

D&D 5E (2014) Primeval Awareness and other hidden gems

Heroes' Feast is fantastic, and actually a better thing to spend a spell slot on than Heal. It makes 12 people immune to poison, immune to fear, and gives them advantage on all Wisdom saves for a day. I found this out after I created a dungeon of creatures that relied on poison, fear and...

D&D 5E (2014) Scroll Casting, casting a spell from a scroll 1 higher than your spell slot

Hey Curt, what if you're a rogue with the "use magical ability" feature (that I'm sure I'm totally misremembering the correct name of)?

    D&D 4E 4e players who converted to 5th edition

My nieces and nephew loved 4th. They love 5th too. I'd judge they find it less confusing.

    D&D 5E (2014) How to emulate older editions of D&D using 5e.

I've thought about running a one-shot game where you roll your stats on 3d6, in order, and you roll your hit points. Hilarity would presumably ensue.

D&D 5E (2014) DMs: How do you handle purely combat-focused groups?

Reward the behavior you want with the reward the players want. In other words, let fun roleplaying lead to the best fights, and let a lack of roleplaying lead to less exciting or numerous fights. Starting example: a magical stone door in a stone wall. "I hide devious and brutal adversaries...

    D&D 5E (2014) What lowish level Dungeon Magazine adventures work well with 5E? (issues 1 - 150)

Chadrathar's Bane (issue 18) is a joy, and should work really well. It's the adventure where everyone gets shrunk down to tiny size.

So I understand, they're literally dragging you behind them with a grappling hook as they flee? Which edition are you playing?

    5e Purple Worm Skeleton CR9

I'd have the tail do necrotic damage instead of poison, myself. Otherwise, fun! I have to do this with undead treants. I should look and see if anyone has beaten me to it.

    Fatigue, sleep, and pain

If you're taking damage, you aren't going to be asleep. Traditionally you could toss someone over a horse, or put them in a travois in order to move someone safely. If pulled by a horse or a dog, I'd say that someone in a travois had to make a DC 15 constitution save in order to rest soundly. If...

Proposed tweak to Sharpshooter and GWM

Only speaking for myself, but I'd never take the feats in a campaign that used this house rule; I'd consider them not useful enough. Feats are often conditional, and getting to use them is that character's chance to shine -- after all, they gave up +2 on an ability score (or +1 to hit and +1...
