They should go by ENWorld post counts - and I'm not just saying that because my local postcounts is over 1000 more than the Wizards board count, but because ENWorld posts are usually about D&D, and not about DDM or Magic.

You can convert without converting! Meaning: You can take the character concept, and relative power level, and rebuild it with the new rules. That can work from 3e to 4e. It can work from 1e to 4e. It could even work from MERP to 4e.

Ignore 4e. Play whatever you want. Let the players play whatever they want. Then, when 4e comes around, you'll have had lots of fun. Chances are that you can easily convert the characters. Maybe you can change it 1:1, but maybe you'll have to use different classes that are close enough to...
