    D&D 5E (2014) DMG excerpt: Carousing!

Yes, the RAW are very confusing. However, it's completely understandable and manageable if you rephrase it as: Work can continue while the character is away, but construction will progress 1/4 as quickly while the character is away.

    D&D 5E (2014) DMG Preview: Creating NPCs

Looks like the artwork comes from Dungeon #206, from September 2012. There's a copy linked here: http://dungeonsmaster.com/2013/04/the-xanathar/

    D&D 5E (2014) Dungeonscape no more?

I'd like to see WotC create an official digital ruleset (as an XML file or database or web service or whatever) that they would keep up-to-date (sort of like D&D Insider)—basically converting all the rules into machine-readable calculations—and then open up access to anyone who wants to develop...

Did you consider playing a 5e sorcerer with the wild magic background?

D&D 5E (2014) Effect of Darkness spell in combat

I see why this might be difficult now… it's a 15-foot radius, not a 15-foot diameter. I'd have to cast it at a spot like 18 feet up in the air.

    D&D 5E (2014) I think I finally get how hiding works

QUTOE I think we're mostly in agreement? I'm saying that being "hidden" does not grant you any special advantage. What matters is whether you can be seen. And taking the Hide action (after meeting the requirements) can help you become unseen, even if someone knows your location while you're...

    D&D 5E (2014) I think I finally get how hiding works

No, I don't think I would quite agree. There is no explicit definition of a "hidden" status that grants special benefits. Hiding is an action you can take. I think it's possible to hide from an enemy in some situations (meaning they have to make a Perception check vs. your Stealth to see you)...

    D&D 5E (2014) I think I finally get how hiding works

Yes, if you are hidden, you are by definition unseen, so you do get advantage. However, you get the same advantage from being unseen whether you're hiding or not. (An invisible creature, for instance, still has advantage even if it's making a lot of noise and attacking repeatedly.)

    D&D 5E (2014) I think I finally get how hiding works

That's correct. Page 189 says "If neither side tries to be stealthy, they automatically notice each other."

    D&D 5E (2014) I think I finally get how hiding works

You might also be able to remain unseen and attack with advantage if the enemy was distracted, or if the area that you popped your head into was lightly obscured (hiding behind a rock in moderate foliage, for instance).

    D&D 5E (2014) I think I finally get how hiding works

Can you stick your head out from a rock (or creature) you are hiding behind and attack with advantage? I would say no. Hiding does not grant advantage—being unseen does—and you are no longer unseen as soon as you pop your head out.

    D&D 5E (2014) I think I finally get how hiding works

True. And, of course, in this example, you'd only hide to avoid detection. You would automatically be unseen behind total cover (and better yet, couldn't be targeted directly at all), whether you hid or not.

    D&D 5E (2014) I think I finally get how hiding works

I've seen a lot of theories for when hiding is allowed, and what it does. After reviewing all of the relevant rules in the 5th edition PHB, I think it does make sense, but you have to jump all over the place to put it together. Key points: "Hidden" is not defined as a condition. You don't...

D&D 5E (2014) Effect of Darkness spell in combat

I think we're agreeing… you can surround a target's head with darkness (blinding them), but still be able to see part of their body. That should give you advantage when attacking them, right?

D&D 5E (2014) Effect of Darkness spell in combat

Thanks. Just had an idea—maybe I could raise the darkness a bit off the ground, so the targets' heads would be enveloped, but not their feet. Then I could see the target, but they couldn't see me, granting advantage.

D&D 5E (2014) Effect of Darkness spell in combat

As a drow, you have darkvision, and you can cast Darkness once a day (after reaching 5th level). I'm having trouble visualizing exactly how that spell affects combat. The spell description says: First of all, bummer that darkvision doesn't work. So much for hiding in the darkness and...

    D&D 5E (2014) Permanent True Polymorph

I'd say that "the transformation becomes permanent" overrides both clauses of the previous sentence. Dropping to 0 hit points or dying would not end a "permanent" transformation.
