D&D 5E (2014) What requested rules change have you refused to change?

That's nothing. In my game we roll to see how much your attack bonus improves each level (if at all), and how many new spell slots you get (if any).

D&D General Dave Arneson’s Pitch for the future of TSR and D&D in ‘97 to Peter Adkison

That's the reason I didn't suggest Sagard specifically, since it looks nothing like him. And since Sagard is not D&D, and D&D is mentioned on the cover along with GI Joe and TF, seems it's just supposed to be a stand-in for D&D as a whole.

D&D General Dave Arneson’s Pitch for the future of TSR and D&D in ‘97 to Peter Adkison

It's not Scarlett. A higher-res version of the image shows that figure not only has big shoulder armour, but a great big bushy moustache and beard as well. And a sword hilt on their back. Given the title of the book, that would make it an allusion to D&D. Some kind of barbarian warrior or something.

Slaying the Dragon: The Secret History of Dungeons & Dragons Review

There is zero basis for any of these claims. Wizards "saved" D&D by being a competent gaming company, who made decisions using data and analysis. The very same decisions could have been made by TSR if they were only more competent.

D&D General Dave Arneson’s Pitch for the future of TSR and D&D in ‘97 to Peter Adkison

Frankly, as an adult when I read his writing I see someone without much education who was trying very hard to cover for that fact.

    Synnibarr vs WotC

It's amusing that the very first bit of that review talks about how the author appears to have written the game straight through, without ever pausing to consider what they have written. Given McCracken's own claim that each of the 1400 powers were written perfectly on the first go, it seems the...

D&D General Dave Arneson’s Pitch for the future of TSR and D&D in ‘97 to Peter Adkison

From what I've read of Riggs, he uses an very biased voice in his writings. Which doesn't make him wrong. But since we can read the letter ourselves, we don't have to rely on Riggs' interpretation. There's nothing insightful there. Nothing that a first-year business student couldn't write in...

D&D General Dave Arneson’s Pitch for the future of TSR and D&D in ‘97 to Peter Adkison

So Arneson wasn't out of touch, he was actually so far ahead that no one could even recognize the genius of his ramblings? Okay.

And that each of them was written perfectly on the first go.

D&D 5E (2014) D&D Next playtest post mortem by Mike Mearls and Rodney Thompson. From seven years ago.

Of course, those things are artifacts of the underlying assumptions of the game system. The decision that healing must be magical in nature leads to the need to Healing Word, e.g.

TSR The Full & Glorious History of NuTSR

They don't see the hypocrisy, because they don't believe they're contradicting themselves. Don't forget the following: There are two genders - male and political. There are two sexual orientations - straight and political. There are two races - white and political. Etc, etc. This is how they...

TSR The Full & Glorious History of NuTSR

You can't generalize from the IRS, because the IRS has been specifically targeted with budget cuts by a certain wing of politicians, and with lower budgets it is more productive to target smaller taxpayers. We have something of the same problem in Canada with the CRA, though not to the same...

D&D General Rant: Sometimes I Hate the D&D Community

To be clear, I was referring to demonstrable misinterpretations, etc. Cases where people claim the rules say X, but when you check the rules it does not say X, and in reality X is a common misrepresentation of the rules made by haters of a particular ruleset. An opinion on whether or not there...

D&D General Rant: Sometimes I Hate the D&D Community

This is true - but you might note that if the person saying they prefer evil orcs provides their reasoning as to why. they are less likely to have motives ascribed to them, since their motives are explicitly stated.

D&D General Rant: Sometimes I Hate the D&D Community

As with anything, don't take the words too literally. I did say that the "what" by itself is only generally uninteresting, meaning sometimes it is interesting by itself. Especially in the context of certain discussions. If the point of a particular discussion is to find out the "whats" of...

D&D General Rant: Sometimes I Hate the D&D Community

You see comments like this a lot in this sort of meta-discussion, so this post is not directed at you per se, since you're only expressing a very common idea. This idea is very reductive and unhelpful. The point of these discussions is not that someone should not be able to express their...

Why Dragonlance's Margaret Weis Left TSR: A Slaying the Dragon Excerpt

I'm interested in this book, but when I read a line like "You couldn’t swing a vorpal sword in the company offices without beheading a genius. Every department was thick with them, women and men whose minds sparkled like obsidian in firelight" It makes me VERY leery of the objectivity of the...

    D&D 5E (2024) DM's no longer getting crits on PC's

This is one of those "why have I never thought of something like this before?" moments. Having a "recharge" mechanic which actually represents the monster taking an action in the game world (such as a dragon sucking in breath) is bloody brilliant. You don't need some add-on mechanic to determine...
