In praise of the Healer Theme

That sounds like an excellent system. If D&D Next has loads of optional rules, the each group will have to decide which rules they wish to include. From ALL to a very limited number of these options.

What is exploration & why is it fun?

But I thought that it was the Cleric casting FIND TRAPS spells . . .

    D&D 5E (2014) I Don't Like Damage On A Miss

I am a huge 4e fan, yet I can certainly agree with "daily martial" powers being removed forever.

In praise of the Healer Theme

I heard the live chat, yet I NEVER heard Merals say, "a DM MUST allow" any theme or other creation a player invents. This is "a tool" to create new unique elements in to your game. Dms allowing or NOT allowing anything they choose is what a DM does. It is not arbitrary nor random. In any game...

Mike Mearls Discusses the First Round of Public D&D Next Playtests

I am unsure If the definition of "skeleton" is the same for all of us here. In my def, like a person the playtest can have ONLY a SINGLE skeleton. But yes I see parts of all editions, I see bits of 4e changed a tad, then reworded to appeal to the Grognard old school fans.</snip>

Mike Mearls Discusses the First Round of Public D&D Next Playtests

Was a "modified 4e skeleton" was the point, not if you see any bits of edition X in the playtest. Stormonu has said what he thinks. You jumping in to this, so now answer, what do you think? Do you think the playtest is a "modified 4e skeleton" ?

In praise of the Healer Theme

Wouldn't your DM have to approve a "custom" theme ?

Dear Wizards of the Coast blog post...

Sounds like even the "master" can still learn things.:D

Mike Mearls Discusses the First Round of Public D&D Next Playtests

OK, Fine AD&D 2e had kits, which are themes & backgrounds but with different name. Themes & Backgrounds are much better names. So you say a 3.5e thing, then ONLY wizards in 5e get at-wills NOT ALL characters. I guess, but is that really a big difference? I'll give you that but It sure cures...

Mike Mearls Discusses the First Round of Public D&D Next Playtests

4E actions were; standard, move, & minor actions. Don't remember seeing standard nor minor actions. Yes the wizard has cantrips at-will, which you can remove the background & theme (for an old school feel), which removes the at-wills. As for wizards having daily spells, that goes back to 1974...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5e Monsters....What should they look like?

I so can agree with that, It would be painful to revert from a 4e stat block.

Mike Mearls Discusses the First Round of Public D&D Next Playtests

I'm not trying to insult you, but I don't see much of 4e at all. What 4e skeleton do you see??? Any other 4e players can jump in. I'm sure most Grognards would be screaming bloody murder, if that were true. I see bits of 4e, like healing overnight, not dying at 10, but things that make 4e 4e...

    D&D 4E Would you still play 4e?

What makes you think DDI will go off-line when D&D next comes out? Maybe maybe not. If people are still subscribing, will WOTC turn down that income, I'm not so sure. Maybe when they will or maybe they will keep 4e support until demand diminishes. Regardless, I will have my 4e books and can...

Mike Mearls Discusses the First Round of Public D&D Next Playtests

If you think the playtest is like 4e, then I doubt you have ever read nor played 4e. Yet I do see much of the wording from older editions, which I would rather have the 4e simple clear to understand style. The playtest is not a reprint of OD&D either. But since D&D Next is the compromise...

Abilities Capped at 20 Won't Work

I disagree with you as well. Yes, It does place importance on your abilities. If you roll your stats (vs point buy or array), you want the best char regardless of which edition you play. Nothing has changed that. I think you are forgetting or ignoring the stated design goal, of flatter math...

    Abstract long rests

Grognards have been hounding Mearls, here is his last tweet. Sounds like he had more suggestions, but I missed them. Mike Mearls ‏MikeMearls Final old school suggestion - long rest gives back level + Con mod hit points

My Rant Apology & Sell Me Flat Math

Since we are currently playtesting levels 1-3, in an early Beta test, why do you NEED to know that.

Anyone know about historical sea traditions, religion, folklore?

Equator-crossing ceremonies, typically featuring King Neptune parade. I'm sure this tradition goes back far. In more modern era, Many rituals are to embarrass rookies sailors. I know in WWII they did things like make you dress up like a mermaid or paint the genitals, of first time crossers.

LONG REST: let's add some realism.

I hope that there will be an "Old school" module of rules, disappointed it was in the playtest. Then this might be a moot issue, but my whole point is please don't hide behind the term "realism". Modern hospital care because your char slept in a bed at the inn is not "realism". You don't...

LONG REST: let's add some realism.

I never heard that about WWII, but it makes a lot of sense. Penicillin wasn't around until the 1920s, Please remember Civil war nurse, Clara Barton. She started following the Northern army with "clean" bandages & other supplies. Maybe "Clara Barton - The RPG" would be interesting?
