D&D General The Player's Quantum Ogre: Warlock Pacts

Fine for someone's game, but for me mechanics follow fiction. You want to make a class that uses similar mechanics to the warlock but has a different narrative? Great! Makes that class, or work with the GM to make it. IMO you shouldn't get to ignore the fiction of your class because you like the...

D&D General The Player's Quantum Ogre: Warlock Pacts

The character you're describing does not follow the warlock narrative, and thus is not a warlock. Why would they use the warlock mechanics instead of something that fits the narrative of their PC?

They should also be guided by the choices the player makes in character creation, including the class they chose to play.

Well there are feats for it, but the training could be more accessible.

And if healing was all that matters, and the PC doesn't like getting their powers from a deity, maybe they should have.

I never played BG3, and it has no influence on my GMing. I just follow the fiction.

Then I will tell you again I'm sorry you've had such a terrible experience in the hobby, because I simply will not assume the worst as you seem to. And I generally don't threaten my warlock and cleric PCs, because they generally don't ignore their patron or God and go against their desires...

D&D General The Player's Quantum Ogre: Warlock Pacts

I'm fine with negotiating the relationship between warlock and patron before the game. But whatever it is, I want that relationship to matter in the campaign. In the fiction. Not to just be an easily ignorance excuse for the PC's super powers.

D&D 5E (2024) NPCs, and the poverty of the core books

And IMO there's no reason a PC under similar circumstances couldn't learn those techniques.

And those things are fine. It's not "any PC can learn what any NPC knows". It's "Anything an NPC could know a PC could know, under the right circumstances".

They're getting "singled out" (and they're not, really, because this happens in classes like cleric and paladin too), because they chose to play a class that explicitly gets its supernatural powers from another being. They didn't have to. And furthermore, in my game fiction informs mechanics...

That would be cool too. How do you think that would work mechanically?

Is that what "the patron should matter to the campaign" means from your perspective? Because that's what I'm asking for.

You don't think armor training makes in-fiction sense?

    D&D 5E (2024) Rate D&D 2024

The only thing I like multiclassing for is A5e's synergy feats, which would be easy to maintain in your system (they just require three levels in two classes). Also I loved 2e. So this works for me.

D&D General GMing and "Player Skill"

RPGs really are a different beast from cardgames and war games though. People think differently about metagaming for a reason.

I'm not happy with any of those, and avoid them whenever I can get away with it without my 5e loving players revolting. What do you mean by hard armor limits?

5E Powered Gamma World: What Should It Look Like

To be fair, I can't think of a game more different mechanically from Gamma World than Apocalypse World in the same genre.
