    Roll for Effect or Intent?

Suffer the consequences, then try another way or give up? What do you do when you fail to get over a wall?

    Roll for Effect or Intent?

I think the assumption you make here that intent should be folded into task when determining the outcome of the roll is unwarranted and subjective. Intent need not have any bearing on the success or failure of any particular task.

D&D General [rant]The conservatism of D&D fans is exhausting.

The first non D&D RPG I ever read was MERP. Fell in love with the crit tables right away.

D&D General I'm a Fighter, not a Lover: Why the 1e Fighter was so Awesome

The great saving throws as you leveled really made a difference too.

D&D General I'm a Fighter, not a Lover: Why the 1e Fighter was so Awesome

Absolutely. 1e was better designed than folks give it credit for IMO, even if the organization left much to be desired.

D&D General I'm a Fighter, not a Lover: Why the 1e Fighter was so Awesome

Yeah. I still roll stats before I choose a class or species (etc) in my current games. But then, I've played far more 1e than any other game.

D&D 5E (2024) What’s the difference between sorcerers, warlocks, and wizards?

Another reason to pull the trigger and make an incompatible 6e.

Pathfinder 2E I played my first PF2e game this week. Here's why I'm less inclined to play again.

I don't think 4e-style mechanics and playstyle are the inevitable next step to problems with 3.5, anymore than they are to problems with 5e.

D&D General Thoughts on HD and Blood Magic

I'm trying to find it, actually. I copied the material a while back into my compilation document, and now I can't find the original.

I can definitely see your point, and would not to averse to a more granular combat system. I've been looking over Rolemaster recently, and it certainly looks like a more simulationist experience.

TTRPG Genres You Just Can't Get Into -and- Tell Me Why I'm Wrong About X Genre I Don't Like

Not sure you can oversupport a genre of game. That's just more games for its fans!

    D&D 5E (2024) Rate D&D 2024

Agree on ACKS 1 and Pathfinder 1. ACKS II is better IMO.

D&D 5E (2024) What’s the difference between sorcerers, warlocks, and wizards?

You're right, they did their best with what they had to work with. WotC's fans can't decide on what they want the official game to be, and WotC doesn't want to push outside of fan desires (much).

D&D 5E (2024) NPCs, and the poverty of the core books

I'm always in the market for explanations.

    D&D 5E (2024) Rate D&D 2024

I put it at 5, where 6 is 2014 5e, and 9 is A5e. I would put 1e at 6 as well, 2e at 7, 3e at 5, and 4e at 3. For reference, DCC and Shadowdark are both at 7, and the various Without Number games and ACKS are all at 8. That's it for games I consider to be a kind of "D&D" with which I am familiar...

Please name an in-fiction minion, that's supposed to be fragile as glass like minions are mechanically.

D&D 5E (2024) NPCs, and the poverty of the core books

As a strong opponent of PC exceptionalism, I agree with this statement. No PC is, IMO, capable of things beyond what any NPC can do. They simply aren't different creatures based on whether or not they're attached to a player.
