I disagree, and really see this as belittling the A5e design work. "Ranger" is not an inherently magical concept, so IMO it doesn't need spells to feel like a ranger. You personally may feel a Ranger isn't a Ranger without magic, but that is your subjective point of view. By the way, what color...

None of the examples you're using are rules governing GM behavior. That, specifically, is what I have a problem with. I'd rather have advice.

Who is "they"? I'm talking about setting hard rules to govern GM behavior in an RPG. I'm not in favor of them.

And it's obvious to me you are judging that tendency. I have no problem with the GM making those kinds of decisions as they see fit, whether or not the GM is me.

I would happily play in a game run under my principles of GMing. There is nothing I want in an RPG that I would see as an issue personally on either side of the screen.

Rules have weight, a sense that you're playing wrong if you don't do what they say. Also, in a game that can be played in many different ways like D&D and most of its relatives, having a rule governing behavior says that other ways should not be pursued, which is something of a slap in the face...

All of that stuff, no matter what game it's found in, is IMO best presented as advice, not rules.

They should have renamed it to "restore vitality" or something long ago. Or changed the way hits, misses and damage are defined explicitly.
