D&D General The Player's Quantum Ogre: Warlock Pacts

My old GM once decided to run a game I didn't like, so I decided not to play. We still hung out socially (we were all friends), and a couple months later I got in on the next game. If I really missed playing and couldn't wait, I would have find another game for a little while.

I don't see a way around that if you can't or won't game with anyone else, and won't run your own game, except trying to force the GM to run something else for you.

Agreed, but I think you are implying that such a group is more rare than I suspect is the case. Tons of games out there with bespoke settings (every licensed RPG, for example), and people who play them.

Dungeons & Dragons: Heroes of the Borderlands - First Impressions

What if they actually said that in the product? "An introduction to D&D for lovers of board games". How crazy would that be?

D&D General What spells should be on the rangers list?

And yet the spell-less ranger exists in Level Up alongside a non-gutted magic system based on the 5.0 rules. Huh.

D&D General [rant]The conservatism of D&D fans is exhausting.

Well, I don't appreciate rules that demand certain specific behavior from the GM like the ones you describe (which I believe have their origin in PBtA and similar narrative-prioritized games), for my part. You also picked the least irritating rules from that category. And I don't see why that...

Gaming is no stranger to politics.

I feel the opposite. The official game has been moving farther and farther away from my preferences for years now. So my focus is on individual tables and options for different kinds of play, because that doesn't cause problems for people who don't agree with me.

    Every gamer I know.

The answer to that IMO is to play in another setting occasionally if you want a PC that doesn't fit.

    D&D General Self-Defeating Rules in D&D

I care far less about what D&D does nowadays than I do about having a game that suits my needs.

Yeah, I edited my post to correct that. I didn't mean you.

I'm sorry you had a bad experience, and it makes sense that it would affect your viewpoint going forward. Just don't expect agreement that your conclusions should be implemented by folks who don't share your experience.

Good, clear advice can do that IMO. Rules that enforce behavior just breed resentment and make people feel constrained.

Everyone remembers their bad GM experiences, but I don't make the mistake of assuming bad is the standard and we should change the rules to limit all GMs, just to be sure.

Supply is an attempt to get around vanilla 5e's neutering of exploration and survival by removing or altering options that inhibit it. It requires some gamism to make the sim work, which I'm ok with because it's necessary for the sim I want to work. For the nth time, it is a spectrum, so @Paul...

With skill specialties and expertise/hindrance dice, Level Up also has a better skill system.

Create food and water doesn't help with Supply. Neither does goodberry. You do not appear to be familiar enough with A5e to counter the claims of those that are.
