D&D General [rant]The conservatism of D&D fans is exhausting.

So your argument is that any disagreement with your position is "badmouthing" it?

D&D General D&D 6e ala Steampunkette: Structural thoughts

That was the point of fighters back in the TSR days too. That and and having a ton of hit points, great AC, and usually the best saves on average

    D&D General Self-Defeating Rules in D&D

See, I thought the point of darkness mechanics was to adjudicate situations in play where it's dark. For me, that's what all the mechanics are for.

Wizards of the Coast Head Explains Benefits to D&D Franchise Model

I miss big video game manuals. I still all the ones from the Ultima series saved on pdf.

D&D General [rant]The conservatism of D&D fans is exhausting.

I am allowed to dislike the preferences of others. It doesn't mean you don't have an absolute right to them, just like I do to mine. It just means we might have a hard time playing the same games.

    D&D General Self-Defeating Rules in D&D

To me the purpose of darkness is to depict areas that don't have any light. I know it sounds silly, but there are dark places in most settings (not to mention the real world), and they should exist in our games as well IMO.

D&D General The Player's Quantum Ogre: Warlock Pacts

Even the non-god clerics get their power from something outside themselves to which they are devoted. That's what a cleric is.

Perhaps there are people here who simply disagree with your stance on the social contract?

D&D General D&D 6e ala Steampunkette: Structural thoughts

I'm not really a fan of "narrative need" having any mechanical effect on play, but done of your other ideas I really like. Big fan of your Level Up products!

D&D General D&D 6e ala Steampunkette: Structural thoughts

I solve this by not pushing a plot in my setting. Sandbox all the way!

D&D General The Player's Quantum Ogre: Warlock Pacts

But Eberron's way of doing things, as much as folks around here love to talk it up, remains pretty much an Eberron thing. It's no more universal (until the aforementioned 4e), than the very much existing in the setting pantheons of Dragonlance, Greyhawk, or the Realms. Same with Eberron's...

D&D General The Player's Quantum Ogre: Warlock Pacts

Sad. We really need to actively practice the DIY philosophy ourselves if we want to keep it.

    What's Your Price Limit?

I use a book when I have one (usually it goes to my players), and my Kindle for me.

    D&D General Self-Defeating Rules in D&D

I don't make assumptions about the system's intentions. I take one that's close and make it more like what I want (generally, more sim, to whatever the practical limit of the table is).

Unless simulationist thinking is fun for you and you believe the fiction needs it. The two can go hand in hand.

    D&D General Self-Defeating Rules in D&D

My favorite OSR specifically removes darkvision and the like from PC species, but leaves it for the monsters. Light is everyone's responsibility, and the solution for this is usually henchmen with torches or lanterns.

    What's Your Price Limit?

My players like physical reference works at the table (so do I, in fact), so I often buy real books for things meant to used in actual play with others. As a result, I would love it they weren't all so darn spendy. I don't the bulk of the art, or the gloss, or the fancy covers etc al. I need a...

    What's Your Price Limit?

Yup IMO none of that is necessary, or even desirable in some cases.

D&D General The Player's Quantum Ogre: Warlock Pacts

WotC (and TSR before them) got money from me every time they released a book with a strong focus on gods, religions and planar stuff. Hardly a waste.
