My playtest of new Mage (Essentials) spells

I just think you are evaluating fireball outside of a reasonable context... Spend 200 gold when you cast it? When the context is that for a standard level 5 party, the Wizard's cut of the gold for the entire level is 400 gold... That doesn't seem reasonable. No, you are not forced to take...

My playtest of new Mage (Essentials) spells

I don't think it is too much of a threadjack, as fireball is an essentials mage spell. The conversation got onto fireball when it was pointed out that fountain of flame does virtually the same damage, but has other features to make it a good spell, while fireball has features to make it a not...

My playtest of new Mage (Essentials) spells

Or you get stunned and lose a daily before it did anything. Even if you don't get stunned, you've got to wait until the 4th round of combat to get the full power of the spell, and pretty much all of the monsters will have unloaded their action points, encounter powers by that point, and some of...

My playtest of new Mage (Essentials) spells

The spell book is exactly the same, except it applies to encounter spells too, and you never 'lose' a lower level spell when you gain a higher level spell. As for the master Evoker ability, when you cast an evocation power you ignore resistances. Which is actually pretty solid.

My playtest of new Mage (Essentials) spells

Delayed Blast Fireball Wizard 25 daily Minor action You create an orb that can be used as a standard action Sustain Minor: The orb lasts until the end of your next turn Standard action Area burst 2 int vs reflex hit: 5d8 + int damage, plus 1d8 for every round you sustained the orb (max 3d8)...

My playtest of new Mage (Essentials) spells

Especially when wizards could have just cast an enlarged Orbmaster's Incendiary Detonation. Which is a level 1 encounter spell. Prone in burst, minion popcorn popper zone of auto death. With an Orb of Imposition it goes from merely better overall to just plain blowing the doors off fireball...

    No Character Builder Update

If they don't get the Dark Sun stuff in at least... Then I think they shouldn't charge for the month, or at least knock a significant amount off the monthly. Wizards isn't entitled to money. They had enough time to get it done, with plenty of "oops we screwed up, Plan B" time as well.

My playtest of new Mage (Essentials) spells

Fireball does 4d6. Not only is it bad, it is REALLY bad even after they buffed it. So bad that you can be excused for thinking it must do 4d8. (edit: I still wouldn't take it even if it did 4d8.)

D&D 4E Essential 4e: Heroes of the Forgotten Lands

Essentials is 4E material, 4E has multiclassing rules. They can multiclass all they like, as they can take feats from any source they like, so long as they meet the pre-reqs. That being said, the Slayer, Knight and Thief really only get utility powers, and multi-class feats generally only let...

    How to fix Dragon

It does seem like they are running out of ideas... Yet they seem loathe to cover the classics. Classics are classics for a reason! How many powers, feats, etc do wizards have? Why can my wizard not pick a power called Summon Fire Elemental? Did they intend for Summon Magma Beast to be a...

D&D 4E Essential 4e: Heroes of the Forgotten Lands

After having had the books for a few days... I'd say each one is by far the best money I've spent on a book in a long while. I'll spoil a power to hopefully tempt some fence sitters into buying the book. Phantom Foes Wizard Attack 7 Encounter Standard Action Area Burst 2 within 10 squares...

If players don't GM, can they complain?

No, it should not serve as a basis for determining who should have the right to complain. The right to complain is earned by the right of the content of the complaint. Shut up worthy complaining: "You are not letting my character be a super-hero that can do any action they wish, whenever they...

D&D 4E Essential 4e: Heroes of the Forgotten Lands

No domain keywords on powers. The Warpriest build has entries that states stuff like "You gain an encounter attack power associated with your domain (storm page 109, or sun page 115)." However, the powers in the domain sections are Cleric Attack/Utility # powers. I think RAW, if you want...

D&D 4E Essential 4e: Heroes of the Forgotten Lands

Abjuration and divination might work as being keywords usually found on utility powers. Or they could do some leader builds for wizards. Controller Rangers, Striker Fighters, Essentials is pretty much saying that the rule system can do what it darn well wants to.

D&D 4E Essential 4e: Heroes of the Forgotten Lands

Yea, I'm really digging the old school 2e feel to the essentials mage. I want my Alteration/Transmutation, Illusion, Enchantment, Divination, Conjuration, Invocation/Evocation, Necromancy, Abjuration schools back. Maybe we will see Necromancy spells and mage bonuses out of Heroes of the Shadow...

D&D 4E Essential 4e: Heroes of the Forgotten Lands

I'll toss this out from the book. It might have been mentioned before, but I don't recall that it was, and even so, I think its worth repeating. Quote from the book: Other Dungeons & Dragons supplements, including Dungeon & Dragons Insider, offer additional powers that you can choose from...

D&D 4E Essential 4e: Heroes of the Forgotten Lands

I've not looked at the red box, but I would assume that if it is presented as a wizard spell, then it is a wizard spell.

D&D 4E Essential 4e: Heroes of the Forgotten Lands

I've got the book. I really like it so far. There are also a few neat things, like AoE spells that have a footprint of a "wall" instead of a burst or blast. There are some nice stuff like spells that daze and also prevent the target from charging. I'm not going to spoil stats or specific...

Fortune Cards: and randomized collectible cards come to D&D

Then why won't Wizards sell magic cards as a non-random living card game, and as random booster packs if people want to draft? I mean seriously. I'm dead curious as to why offering a full playing set of cards for each expansion is such a terrible idea for a product. Especially considering the...

D&D 4E Played Dark Sun 4E Last Night

The Darksun setting is really a great one, but I think the 4E campaign guide is setting you guys up for failure. With Darksun, it is a "Sword and Planet" setting, where the alien nature of the world and cultures is a key factor in the enjoyment of the setting. One of the big deals with the...
