5E: Monstrous Arthropods for Fifth Edition

Okay, I am musing about tweaking the Giant Tropical Damselfly to STR 20 (+5), DEX 17 (+3) so it has the same DEX +6 saving throw as its smaller cousins with their DEX +6. It just seems odd for a beast that must weigh as much as a rhinoceros to be better at aerial dodging and evading than one...

5E: Monstrous Arthropods for Fifth Edition

Updating the Giant Damselfly. Updating the Giant Dragonfly. Updating the Giant Emperor Dragonfly. Updating the Giant Tropical Damselfly. Suits me, although I guess we'd better leave these until after we've finished some of our other conversion. The AD&D big cats are way more lethal than a...

5E: Converting Monsters from White Dwarf Magazine for Fifth Edition

Yeah. There's quite a backlog. Some have been left unfinished for a while, like the Black Locust. At least we're getting through the 5E conversions faster than Freyar and I have been working on the 3E ones. Some of those were started literally years ago.

    Mayfair Games Role Aids Monsters

Fixed a few minor issues with the Index of Mayfair Fiends and Celestials. Whenever I see this thread I am tempted to transcribe the original stats for the Demons to this thread, but then I look at the monumental amount of text that I'd have to type out and have second thoughts.

5E: Monstrous Arthropods for Fifth Edition

Hmm, should I give the Dragonfly proficiency or advantage on Acrobatics checks when flying? Something like: Expert Aerialist. The giant odonatid has advantage on Dexterity (Acrobatics) checks when flying. It's very tempting, but might be gilding the lily. If the SRD Panther doesn't get...

5E: Monstrous Arthropods for Fifth Edition

I'm also wondering about giving it an ability to counteract a flying target's ability to dodge out of the way, since Odonata specialize in catching flying insects that naturally would rather not be caught and eaten. How about one of the following: Aerial Dogfighter #1. If a giant odonatid is...

5E: Monstrous Arthropods for Fifth Edition

Hmm, the original AD&D Giant Dragonfly could only grapple Tiny creatures with its leg basket, so I've wondering about reducing the grapple limit of the Odonatids a bit. However, I want the Giant Emperor Dragonfly to be able to catch Giant Wasps, which are Medium size. We could make it so the...

5E: Monstrous Arthropods for Fifth Edition

So any objection to this? If not, I'll update the Odonatids' abilities in a day or two.

5E: Converting Monsters from White Dwarf Magazine for Fifth Edition

We'll just make do with that then. Will update the Indexes. EDIT: I included a "Variant: Weresnake Serpentcaller" entry in the Indexes as its Challenge Rating is different from a regular Weresnake.

5E: Converting Monsters from White Dwarf Magazine for Fifth Edition

It doesn't make much difference to me, so which one would you like to start with? Don't remember much about the Ice Maiden or Shim-Shari, would have to look them up. The Gazer was a one-trick pony, plus the original statistics and description are so bare-bones we don't have much to work with...

    Converting Ravenloft monsters

Works for me. There are some Dragon Magazine monster conversions that have been on my to-do list for a long time, but I fancy addressing one of the Creature Catalog Corrections and 3.5 Upgrades that haven't got addressed. Of those on the list, the Colossus is the most tempting. …I really need...

Special Conversion Thread: Lycanthropes and their ilk

Updated the Weredragon (True Drakanthrope) Working Draft. We've still got a lot of magenta magenta text to sort out. We started discussing Hit Dice back in June but got sidetracked. That's June 2020. Gods, we've been working on this one for a long time. That's four years ago! The current...

5E: Converting Monsters from White Dwarf Magazine for Fifth Edition

Have added Keen Smell to the the Enworld Weresnake. That's weird, why has the speed changed? The previous version was the correct "Speed 30 ft. (30 ft., swim 30 ft. in snake or hybrid form)" from what I remember. Also, the Blowgun does 1 piercing damage, not 5 (1d4 + 3).

Looks OK. Will update the Indexes.

5E: Monstrous Arthropods for Fifth Edition

The second paragraph of Dodging Flight still needs work. How about:  If a giant odonatid is carrying or grappling a creature that is too heavy for the odonatid to fly with, it must release the creature to use Dodging Flight. If the odonatid is grappling a creature light enough to carry through...

5E: Monstrous Arthropods for Fifth Edition

    I did wonder about tweaking the ability scores slightly, like so: Creature STR DEX CON Giant Damselfly 12 (+1) 18 (+4) 11 (+0) Giant Dragonfly 15 (+2) 18 (+4) 12 (+1) Giant Emperor Dragonfly 18 (+4) 18 (+4) 13 (+1) Giant Tropical Damselfly 21 (+5) 18 (+4) 14 (+2) Just so the...

5E: Monstrous Arthropods for Fifth Edition

Have updated the Indexes. …hold on a second, where's the Credit! For some reason, I gave it: (Monster designed by Casimir Liber and Cleon on the Creature Catalog Monster Homebrews forum) But the Giant Horsefly is originally a 1E AD&D monster, so it should refer to the first published source...

5E: Monstrous Arthropods for Fifth Edition

Okay, I crunched some numbers and due to its numerous special abilities I had couldn't get getting a Medium beast Giant Dragonfly to fit into 7 HD and Challenge 2 without giving it piddling damage. Also, if I had its Legs do bludgeoning damage it boosted the CR too high except for the Giant...

Double dang it, it's missing (hover) after it's fly speed. I was sure I'd already included that.

5E: Monstrous Arthropods for Fifth Edition

Dang it, forgot the Charisma. Think I'll give it CHA 5 to make them slightly more attractive than a Giant Spider, since D&D seems to like picking the fugliest spiders to represent the monstrous version but the flavour text of the Giant Dragonflies suggests they are quite attractive. You...
