    Your gaming experience...

    1. Started in 1977 with D&D 2. Played all iterations of D&D up to and including Fourth Edition. Also played Gamma World back in the day, bit of Traveller, bit of WFRP 1st ed.. Got heavily into Shadowrun for a number of years, sort of at the expense of 2e. Also Alternity. Currently playing...

    Antimagic Field vs. See Invisibility

I'd have to agree with Anguish. Invisibility is an illusion. The subject of a See Invisible is not affected by the illusion. I don't see a case for some kind of detecto-force passing between the observer and the observed that an anti magic field would block. Put another way: If you (with no see...

    Your own personal gaming terms...

DeadDead - a PC that has gone past -CON (as opposed to just 'Dead' meaning 'down'). Gross - Uber-powerful/unbalanced. Mr President - Generic term for the clerics in our 3x games that would be kept out of the remotest danger by a curtain of melee types.

    I need a name for a setting

Sounds quite Peter F Hamilton-y. Nice! Per Ardua, Ad Astra?

Wandering Monsters - yea or nay?

I voted yes but I rarely use 'random' wandering monsters. Instead I pretty much always have a group of dynamic participants in play during adventures and I try and track their activity around the adventurers. Currently, for example, my adventurers are tracking a group of cultists (dynamic...

Ways to tell if one of your players might be a DM/GM

Your player might be a DM if.. When you ask for their armour class they say 'just roll and tell me what you hit.'

    Midnight

Currently playing in a PF Midnight campaign. Our DM is keeping everything very close to his chest re setting and I haven't read any Midnight materials (i.e. all we know about the world is discovered through play). Changes/additions to standard PF AFAICT Heroic Paths No Clerics Druids can...

Has the Vancian Magic Thread Burned Down the Forest Yet? (My Bad, People)

That's certainly why I'm a fan. My ingrained, blinkered resistance to change prevents me from regarding a game system with the appropriate hatred and scorn.

    Do You Use XP

Running my first AP pretty much killed off XP as written for me. When you are being told that characters 'should now be x level', you might as well just make it so. In our current game the GM is using RAW though and I still get a mild buzz from the accumulative process.

A reason why 4E is not as popular as it could have been

To flip this whole "feels like" thing around: Take a (hypothetical) player who has come to the game through the latest edition. She has nearly three years under her belt. At her local club (common here in the UK) she joins in a 2e game one week. If her take was: "This is great fun, but it...

Does anyone want to talk about D&D?

This is more like it! After an extended real-life enforced breakdown in our regular sessions we've managed to get a weekly game going online, with four players in the UK and two in Switzerland. Hoping to add in another player who is in the Seychelles shortly. OUr current GM is running a...

    How do you describe D&D?

I was asked by my brothers-in-law about the whole D&D thing over Christmas and I reached for the Poker Night analogy straight away - it's an excellent one for communicating the social aspects, the regularity etc.. The whole A-Team thing is more a response to: 'Yes but how does it work? Is it...

    How do you describe D&D?

I've had to do this a few times and I've discovered that the quickest way to make progress is to ditch the whole elves thing and explain the concept in terms that are easier to grasp for the non fantasy-literate. I still find this easier, even since LotR. The example I tend to use is the...

Pathfinder 1E Virtual Table Tops – Which for Pathfinder (Pros/Cons)?

We're currently using D20Pro for our weekly online sessions. No serious complaints, though our DM has some minor issues sometimes with loading creatures during play. D20Pro will import Herolab files so as long as you have all the appropriate updates at both ends (and haven't customized your...

Looking for a good fantasy city (d20)

I only hear excellent things about Freeport. Or of course there's Ptolus - but that may be too big a beast!

    Where's my D&D Essentials?

Another vote for Leisure Games, as long as you're not discount sensitive. I pass by Orc's Nest pretty regularly though and tend to pick stuff up as and when. AFAICT they are well stocked with 4E stuff. Their online doesn't seem to keep pace with the store though.

What religious pantheon do you use?

I use my own. Copied and pasted from my notes: Oort, Moulder of Worlds (major deity) Oort is Creator of SketchyWorld; Master of Doubt; Enemy of Detail; Friend, Guide, Storyteller. Symbol: Six Sided Die Align: Chaotic Good Domains: Chaos, Good, Healing, Luck, Protection Weapon: Greatsword...

The frakkin X-Mas Tree Effect: How to minimize it's impact in play?

    1. Severely restrict the amount of magic in your world. No 'magic shops', no shopping lists. Magic is only gained as treasure (and then rarely) or purchased at quite eye-watering expense from the random rag-bag of items available in big cities (or stolen/crafted to order which is also...
