Pathfinder 1E Sell me on Pathfinder!

A mixture of factors: Mostly, we were driven to PF by 4E - not in a negative way: It was more a case of needing somewhere to place our pent-up new edition demand when we discovered that 4E was not our cup of tea. Additionally, Paizo got it just right with the alpha and beta releases. I was...

Which D&D Campaign World did you enjoy most?

Dark Sun for me, with a special mention for Harn.

Some specific questions about a few virtual tabletops, help appreciated!

Good question! I guess the answer would be... inertia. We were fully intending to use all those features, but over time we felt they got in the way of the 'real' gaming experience without adding enough. I (and most others at our table) use HeroLab to run my PCs in any case. Or just good ol'...

Some specific questions about a few virtual tabletops, help appreciated!

Our group tried Fantasy Grounds. Now we use d20Pro. FG is very slick, a v well rendered table top with all bells and whistles. However, we found it v difficult to get ourselves up and running due to networking issues similar to those you mention above. We are similarly technically proficient...

You don't play 4E, but what did they get RIGHT?

    1. 'Bloodied' - we carried the habit of declaring when monsters were on half hp across to Pathfinder when we stopped playing 4E. 2. Ditto passive perception. 3. Like the 4E simplified combat actions and if I could be bothered would prob import to PF, but PF has added new actions that a lot of...

Okay, so *why* is EN World GM-centric?

Speak for yourself! ;) I use capricious, arbitrary SoD effects to keep my players locked in the character creation minigame, giving me time to take naps behind the GM screen. Every now and again I rouse myself for long enough to hand out a bunch of treasure for them to argue over.

Did WotC underestimate the Paizo effect on 4E?

    I think you overstate.

Essentials - Will you be getting it?

I would have expected more in option 5, though my option wording was far from perfect. The only other entirely misleading conclusion I can draw is that: 1. approx 2.5 times more people play 3x/PF than Basic/1E/2E 2. approx 2.5 times more people play 4E than 3x/PF 3. Thus WotC should release 5E...

Essentials - Will you be getting it?

There's been a lot of chat about Essentials: Will 4E players be adding it to their games or switching altogether? Will non 4E players give it serious consideration? A perfect opportunity to gather some entirely unscientific poll data for us to post to and fro about until the end of time...

Did WotC underestimate the Paizo effect on 4E?

Speaking from my own experience, I think the whole 'Paizo stole customers from WotC' idea is far more nuanced and malraux is about right. Our group were eager 4E switchers - we actually competed to see who would get hold of the core books first. So WotC got (and kept) their 4E cash from us -...

Are there Fun/Unique/Interesting Differences in American vs. UK gaming sensibilities?

This is a good summary of my experience. I think the absurdist nature of the dungeoncrawl also appeals to our group - a bunch of anything-but-shiny adventurers (emphatically not 'heroes') repeatedly subjecting themselves to unspeakable injury and ordeal deep underground in order to acquire the...

What would WotC need to do to win back the disenchanted?

I agree that CAGI has probably been kicked around the room enough but as briefly as I can: The issue for some people with CAGI is intent and free will. Abstractions are a necessary part of gaming in an imagined world and we all accept them. But an abstraction that commandeers the free will of an...

    D&D 5E (2014) Essentials: More like 3.9e than 4.5e (link inside)

    D&D 5E (2014) Essentials: More like 3.9e than 4.5e (link inside)

Personally, I have no such expectations. I'm not getting any kind of signals (though some clearly are) that this is a re-design or an edition change or what have you. Not even sure that the concept of 'edition' really fits D&D any more. Instead my sense is that of an overlay of new options that...

    D&D 5E (2014) Essentials: More like 3.9e than 4.5e (link inside)

Absolutely. But I didn't want to get into all of that. That will be the ultimate test. They are trying to pull off a very tricky balancing act. In the end it may not be enough for me, but Essentials (and the language being used to launch/preview it) bears the hallmarks of considered market...

    D&D 5E (2014) Essentials: More like 3.9e than 4.5e (link inside)

The word that springs to mind for me is 'reboot'. That might be a little strong but I'm getting the distinct feeling that WotC are reaching out to those D&Ders who didn't switch editions (or did switch and abandoned) with an opportunity to have another go at 4E with a clean slate. This...
